Its Thanksgiving, and i hear that families have trouble getting through them, together, without fights. Anyone care to share their particular disaster?

I dont celebrate with my extended family anymore. They define dysfunction and family violence. One year my two uncles got pretty drunk and one ended up trying to stab the other one and the police were called. OY what a mess. I remember being little and my mom would make us leave early. I was so mad but now that I am grown I know she made us leave because everyone was drunk and getting nasty. She knew the fighting would start and did not want us to witness it. I have friends come over and we have a great time with no drama.

My family is pretty tame. Though we have the full spectrum of variety, from the red neck uncle who has the ugly dog, shotgun, and his favorite beer tattooed on his arm... to the elitist rich aunt who always hosts and has a daughter so snobby she got fired from a volunteer position her father was paying the salary for.

This year though my little brother came home from the job core, so I am excited to see him. He brought a friend with him, who has no family near for Thanksgiving, cause he is a sweetheart like that. Sadly my aunt is an elitist bitch who doesn't want a "Mexican" at her Thanksgiving so my mom is going to hold her own smaller gathering so my little brother and his friend can be included.

The worst thing i can remember happening at my family gatherings was my uncle letting us kids have a smoke of his cigarettes. Oddly enough , none of us smoke now - lol. All i remember of it was feeling a bit "green".

Unlike Halle Berrys Thanksgiving - where apparently, her baby daddy and her current beau got into a fist fight at her house whilst handing over the kid. Really good parenting there![8|]

The only one I can think about was about 25 years ago when I was in Grad school. My aunt raised an absolute brat. He was at the thanksgiving table and at age 13, had a tantrum because his mom didn't butter his bread right. He then went outside to stand in the rain and pout.
The aunt, lovely enabler that she is, went on and on about his alphabet soup of problems. I said "I don't think he has ADHD" She brightened up and asked what I thought (new problems to drug him for) and I said "He has NSKB" when she asked for elaboration I said "It stands for Needs a Swift Kick in the Butt". I smiled and left the table.
Walked out in the driveway in the rain and explained to the little ingrate that he was an insult to the entire male half on the human race and "When shit don't go your way, you just have to fuckin DEAL with it"
I smiled and came in and resumed my meal. A few minutes later, he came in, mumbled "Sorry mom" and resumed. He ended up turning out OK. I guess it took 13 years for someone to say "NO" to him.

At my little brother and his wife's wedding about 21 years ago, her brothers got drunk and got into a fight.

At birthday parties for my niece when she was young, all of the adults would be drunk before the birthday cake was served and her brothers would get into a fight


hmmmmm...I am sensing a pattern, just not quite sure what it is...

2009.

Dishing mashed potatoes, being asked about a young man my husband and I sponsored.
Brother starts, and ends with your a nigger lover.
He gets a dollop of hot mashed potatoes to the face and a chair takes a serious skid across the room[:D]

This year was much better. If it wasnt for dear mother and her want of all her damaged children put together for one whole day. I'd eat seafood, with an umbrella drink on a windex colored water with my kids. No mashed potatoes.

Picture house full of strongly-opinionated dominants with vastly wide generations gaps (strict WWII-generation Dad who thinks things should be done a CERTAIN way against us modern offspring who firmly stand our ground about how things WILL be done)...holidays have always been loud and full of head-butting with the submissive spouses puttering about trying to enjoy the gathering dispite the extreme volume.
But then almost every holiday without fail, someone always shows up at the door with a mechanical crisis and we leave everything to go help them. When it's for SOMEONE ELSE, we work well together. When it's our own issues we are back to butting heads.
