So many people try to stereotype us kinky folk. What would surprise people that might not correlate with your BDSM persona?

For me a very submissive sissy it is my career- I have spent years in a macho male dominated niche of the construction industry. I often think it is humorous to be wearing my hard hat and my panties.

Personally, I think some people in BDSM get initially surprised when you don't assume a "personna" and just act real and treat them like real people. Or maybe they're not as surprised as appreciative. I find you only get stereotyped if you act like a stereotype.

littlewonder -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/21/2012 9:50:02 PM)

I'm a general, run of the mill, submissive personality. I'm submissive about everything in my life unless I have no other choice otherwise. Those who knew me wouldn't find anything about me surprising. I guess it's because I don't keep any of my life secretive. I'm an open book.

I like romantic comedies and I'm metro as hell. I just got told I have more clothes than any gay man alive.
Oh yeah, and I have a tie fetish-I critique every tie I see, especially on like the TV news and shit

And he says I'm picky about how I look and what I like. [8D]

and yeah, his tie fetish is funny. Every time someone wears one on tv, he always comments. I don't buy him ties because I'm afraid he'll hate it lol. And I love love love that he's metro. I like a man who knows how to dress, act and make himself look good.

Hmm I honestly can't think of anything that would surprise the kinky folks about me. The non-kinky people in my life know I am submissive to the Mister. The kinky people in my life know I'm more of a take charge, non-submissive person in my work and family life.

If I think of something I'll post it. :)

Nelee -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/22/2012 10:50:53 PM)

Even though I'm pretty darn submissive, I'm really bratty and pushy when it comes to "geeky guys" in my normal life. Whenever we're playing video games and I win, I start to act really princess-like and bratty around them. It's weird lol but they listen, so it's w/e.

See, they just don't know how to play em. If I was losing, I'd employ "distraction" techniques on you

I am the boss at work, which employs 99% men...I'm the only woman and I'm quite the rigid stickler.
They know not to cross me, (I'm too darned imaginative regarding my responses) and I've got a great rapport with them.
They would be shocked to find I am a collar wearing submissive.

I garden, sew, cook, etc. But in a very macho way, lol!

*perk* see if you quilted and liked fabric shops, i'd have to perve you more often.

Muttling -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/23/2012 12:10:53 AM)

I find it quite entertaining that this question comes up from time to time in the community as well as vanilla world. I've been stereotyped a number of times since I'm submissive and I'm a combat veteran.

I am a closet bird watcher. I don't like to tell people, because they may get the wrong idea about me. They might think I'm some slightly intellectual, nature-loving geek or something.

AND We all all know I'm WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to kewl for that.

Its getting very cold here now and I have just finished making a bird table. The finches are presently going through a sack of sunflowers a week and every morning before I go to work, I hang up bacon rind and grated cheese.
We are going back to the UK for two weeks over Christmas and I'm already worried about the birds [8|]

The other thing I love is housework. I think its to do with the fact that I was brought up in a very messy house. I also spent years of working hard and not having enough hours in the day to clean so I had to employ a cleaning lady. Being able to do it myself now is great because as far as Im concerned, only I can do it properly. [:D]

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/23/2012 3:18:11 AM)

We've had squirrels at the bird feeder eating my pricey bird seed mix. [&o]

We get a wide variety of birds, lots of cardinals, house finches, chickadees, and lately some gorgeous birds that we are fairly sure are pine grosbeaks.

Winters are hard here so we will be getting more and more varieties the colder it gets.

The cats love the window where they can see the bird feeder, it's like having kitty kable.

RemoteUser -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/23/2012 9:15:06 AM)

I don't really have a persona.

However, I occasionally think about putting on a cape and a mask before grocery shopping. The only drawback is my allergy to prison.

It's actually harder for me to put what I do in the context of BDSM than it is to segregate it. I'm just me. This may have to do with the fact that stereotypes are inherently external, and I haven't had an OOBE in a while now. (I can reflect, and apply context, but it all seems so biased.)

SpyUnderCover -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/23/2012 1:00:51 PM)

I am a complete wimp when it comes to watching spooky movies. Doesn't matter if it's a psycho-slasher, aliens, werewolves, the devil, or whatever; even a cheesy black and white B-movie will make me scared to be alone. lol

I love to cook and clean. I love doing laundry, especially the folding. One would think that, as a Domme, I'd want someone else to do that stuff for me but I love doing it myself. I just think of other things for him to do for me instead.

Bwahaha, I call that playing dirty! And they know I can play dirty right back, and I usually win in that regard, so they don't even try [;)]

Bah, all's fair in love and... you know. Besides, with my favorite, popping out the battery pack, it usually ends that fight [:)]

I've never really worried about what other people thought about me. I have already told most of my friends and colleages (the ones that are close to my age) about being on cm. I think the thing that would weird them out the most is that I like to knit, and want to learn more about crocheting. I even bought a book about it. Since they know me as a hands on carpenter, with a love of power tools, they would never think that this is a desired hobby for me. Other than that, I don't censor myself from my friends. Take it or leave it, it's who I am.

SacredDepravity -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/25/2012 8:56:43 PM)

Oh, lots of things and the same in the other direction. If people wish to stereotype or box me in, they will be sorely disappointed with the results.

littlewonder -> RE: What about your vanilla life would surprise (11/25/2012 9:10:09 PM)

I have been trying to think of anything at all in my life that would surprise people about me....bdsm or not and the only thing I can think of is when I moved here to Baltimore to be with Master and my family would call me. They were always surprised that I was happy, smiling, laughing and just having fun. I was finally free to lead a life where I could do that. But even that doesn't surprise them anymore now. Most are happy, some are jealous and others....I dunno. I don't hear from them much. Bdsm people though? I don't know any face to face anymore. They all disappeared from my life years ago.
