Cost me $50 bucks yes more than I had planned but I have stuffing, I have turkey, I have Mashed taters, a pumpkin pie, and Hawaiian Sweet Rolls. I will not drive anywhere, I will not fight the crowds, I will not stand in line for an hour while my lower back screams at me. I will have left overs Damn it! and Screw them all!

If you were on a yacht, would you even notice the day passing by? I vote for Chinese food, preferably a takeaway, abetted by a couple films and a little net surfing. No biggie. And at least they'll be glad to see you at the Chinese restaurant. While it may be true that many places will have an overabundance of volunteers at this time of year (and we have many places in New York, where even at other times of the year you have to sign up to volunteer, just so they can control the number of volunteers), I think it is not necessary to dissuade someone from trying to volunteer. It looks like you personally don't enjoy volunteering your time in a situation such as you describe. It doesn't mean others would feel the same about the experience. And your reasons for volunteering (or more accurately, not volunteering) strike me as very odd. The nature of the other volunteers? The male/female ratio? The sad aspects of being surrounded by the poor? Are you talking about going to a bar/club/party or volunteering at a soup kitchen, because I'm a bit confused. [&:]

I gave some thought to doing the Chinese food thing. The problem is that, in Roanoke, there are several Chinese restaurants. I think that the owners have _heard_ of Chinese food, but have never seen it in practice; they are all horrid. I'd rather eat McDonalds. There was one time my family went to a Chinese restaurant for Thanksgiving though: This was when my mother was pregnant with me. My parents had two kids with a third on the way; they had saved up for a fresh turkey for the holiday. My mother had set the turkey out in the sunroom to keep cool until cooking time. That may sound strange, but this was late November in Massachusetts. It was plenty cool in the "sunroom" to keep a turkey chilled. Well, my father went out hunting with his friend as was the tradition in those days. The dogs were lying on the shotguns as he woke up before dawn so that they wouldn't get left behind. - Irish setters can be a bit paranoid about that. He, Meg and Tov went out to create devastation on the local pheasant population but came home empty-handed. They also came home to find my mother in tears. It turns out that, in addition to the turkey, someone had locked Ivan in the sunroom. Ivan was the cat. My father asked what my mother was crying about and she just pointed at the door to the sunroom. Ivan had eaten so much raw turkey that he was still lying on the table unable to move. Without missing a step, my father picked up Ivan - shotgun still in hand. He was about to leave the house and execute the cat for crimes against humanity when my mother cried out, "Stop! He's just a dumb animal!" Ivan's life was spared and the family dined at the Chinese restaurant. I blame my fetish for Asian women on this series of events. Now all I need to do is find out why I also have fetishes for blondes, brunettes, raven haired beauties, island girls, black girls, and Aussie accents.

Here in Baltimore, almost every single restaurant is open for Thanksgiving dinner. There are a few here who do a "community sitdown" type of dinner on Thanksgiving. Complete strangers all sit at the same table and benches together to eat. It's a way of getting to know the people in your city and community. And no, these are not cheap, homeless shelter types of places. These are usually the organic, local food types of places that are usually very expensive. But if you are alone for the day and you can splurge what you would normally pay for a typical Thanksgiving dinner at home, I could see it being a nice thing to do.

I might be an Aussie and thus doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving (well I do, however I celebrate it daily by reminding my family and friends that I care for them) however it kinda sounds like you have missed the thankfullness gene. As someone who has done a lot of volunteering, I was really hoping you would choose that but I had an inkling that you wouldn't having read your posts over a couple of years on here. A pity, you may have learnt a valuable lesson. There are people who live in much shittier situations who are still able to smile and be thankful for the small amount that they do have. and MalcolmNathanial, Aussie accents rock ... grins

Pretty sure it is too late for this, but you never know .... How about adopting a few Soldiers who are not able to make it home for the holidays? Typically there is either a program already set up that you could go through or you can call the base liaison and they can help you out. You could probably adopt as few or as many as you'd like.
