FelineFae -> Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and what else ? (11/8/2012 12:38:30 PM)

Okays, so i'm doing some work on a problem. However, i lack enough symbols to continue. In my formula, i represent males with the customary sign for Mars. Accordingly, the symbolic counterpart to this, the sign of Venus, is used to represent females. But that's it ! Well, at least to my understanding of semiotics.

i need signs that can represent all the other genders. While most societies only reckonize the two sexes, there are several cultures that accept three genders as a norm, and in one part of the world, there's even a religion that reckonizes five separate genders in humans. Cool, huh ?

Sooo . . . anyone out there have any ideas ?

Well, those are ancient G_ds and planets, so you have 7 (maybe 6) to choose from. You could use moons (Io and Europa spring to mind), or perhaps some Egyptian hieroglyphs.

All of these are symbols used by/for transgender people. Maybe one of these will work.

Thank you both, very much. Your responces were quite helpful, and i've come up with the below as at least a temporary fix.
i just wish for the ability to conduct a comparative study to make sure i'm not stepping on anybody's toes in this area.

Well why stop with Mars and Venus? The entire astrological lexicon is a well established symbolic system, as is the tarot, see Jung.

I'm a Cancer which is associated with domesticity, and I am more feminine n certain respects than many people seem to be comfortable with. There is also Gemini, which is associated with Janus, there is Scorpio which is steeped in the mysteries of sexuality, etc.

Setting attempts to fortell the future aside, astrology and the Tarot are complex symbolic systems based on observations of human nature in general, honed by thousands of years of praxis, as old as any language, possibly older.

The icons and archetypes of tarot were an initial reference point for me to review, though somewhat frustraiting as my own personal library is chugging its way easternly unpon the Pacific.

Had i been trying to add only a single symbol for those of all ranges of the androgynous spectrum, i think i'd agree that borrowing symbols from the established GreekyRomanish astrological signs would have sufficed. Janus did, in fact, keep popping into mind. However, no matter what i found, the conotations ( at least the bulk of modern conotations ) were too restrictive for my needs. Damn those external variables. Since it was the modern points of view that were throwing me for a loop, i found that adding elements of modern symbols from the LGBT subculture ( Syl's idea ) most helpful.

Sadly, the library here lacks any works of Carl Jung. Trust me, i looked, i was sad. There's one book on human sexuality, and it was wrote before i was born. While normally i have no problem with old books, i require modern news in this area and let's just say that my currently available database makes me sneeze a little from its dust levels. The last part was not figurative, the "ology" zone of the library doesn't see much foot traffic.

i'm satisfied with what i've devised, though i'm sure when i get more information availble, i'll be at great temptation to tweak the edges. Or crumble up my note pages, hit my head on the desk, and start over.[;)]

Okay, i'll say it, the internet isn't always a bad thing. And i know that the internet can be very helpful if you use the right words, but sometimes i get so caught up in a bigger pictures or the opposite and can't look beyond a trivial detail in order to find that perfect keyword by which to obtain the riches of desired information. That ability just flies right out the window. i also have i theory that i have damaged the language portion of my brain based on the fact that after too much soju i am reported to have started conversing in Gaelic, German, and Hebrew. But that's a theory for another day. Back to the point. Sweet DeviantlyD, Google is a useful tool, you with your own fresh persceptive are the real friends!

i was going to read a book on Korean culture this afternoon ( my time ), but this changes everything. [:D]

Please excuse this snarky response but it screams to be said:

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, and ... Gays are from Earth.
