Finding your local scene 
first let me say i am sorry i am not really steeling this title just borrowing it on the hopes of expanding. So know i mean no harm or discord.
I just wanted others here who live in San Ferando valley area, there is really cool dugon called the Lair De Sade. Every other saturday they have an insight, this is a class type meeting, where other come together to talk about common intrest, This saturday there is a really wonderful dom speaking on slave protocal, and postions, He is also a wonderful floggeing master if you wish to learn or grow on your own experince.
This class starts at 330 and you can find their site at the Lair De Sade,

I am going to the Lair for the first time in the very near future for my first public play... I am a little nervous, but also excited! The Dominant that I am seeing really likes that club and speaks very highly of it.

Thank you for the information!!  I too live in the San Fernando Valley, and was in a group that met in West Los Angeles many years ago, but lost track of them.  This may be a good place to get back into the more formal scene again.
