MasterJohnSteed -> SO tired of Political correctness (11/4/2012 5:25:26 PM)

I've just made my first year with my current company. The one thing I truly hate is all the PC (Political Correctness) Oh I said something that hurt your feelings. Put your Man Pants on and deal with it.

If you don't smile at the people that walk down the hallway they get upset about it, If I say something that someone feel is exclusionary I get a talking too.

What ever happened to being an adult and accepting that other people's opinions (While you might not like them) are just that their opinion and has nothing to do with you and your life!

Whatever happened to adults like you conducting themselves politely in the workplace?

I'll agree on some fronts, ie: every kid winning or not keeping score. The Mommies on TV that suggested hinting to the mother of a bully rather than saying it right out. A friend was written up for a fart....

There are some areas that are better served. We shouldn't be using the words retard, N****, etc.

JanahX -> RE: SO tired of Political correctness (11/4/2012 6:21:12 PM)

Thats why Im not working for anyone but myself anymore. Im not about to compromise myself as a human being to kiss someones ass to make them feel better. If they dont like it - tough shit. And if I dont like them, Ill let them know.

Being worried about hurting someones feelings is not at all at the top of my concern list. Saying what needs to be said and whether or not its worth saying is how I roll.

America is way to wrapped up about hurting one another's feelings or offending someone. I was listening to this NPR show once about US PR - and how other countries like China look at the US like its nuts. They are all about "say what you mean and mean what you say and quit fucking around."

Marini -> RE: SO tired of Political correctness (11/4/2012 6:59:17 PM)

We live in era in which you have to be so PC, you almost have to act robotic in most situations at work.

I can totally relate to how you feel.
I do mean totally relate.

I have learned to stay in prayer and almost constant meditation at work, as much as possible.

Time to start practicing a big smile so that you are ready to go to work tomorrow.
Hang in there Master John.

Thing is, if you are courteous and polite, show consideration for others and express yourself articulately you don't have any need to be PC at all.

ARIES83 -> RE: SO tired of Political correctness (11/4/2012 7:49:42 PM)

It's not political correctness man, it's just basic
people skills, turn the charm up to 11 and it
doesn't matter what you say haha.

You know I adore, admire and love you, BUT, I think John is talking about not being able to go against the status quo at all these days in most working situations.

I could be wrong, but I think I feel John's frustrations, with the reality that many of us don't feel as if we can question certain situations or policies, or really express ourselves in a civil manner, without it being held against us.

stella, I don't think this is an issue of people not wanting to be courteous, polite or considerate.

Take care and waving to you from across the pond.

You may be tired of being PC, but in the workplace, you have to suck it up.

I just lost my job and had no idea why and a colleague told me she heard that I spoke up assertively to people on the phone (not even in person mind you, as I worked at home) and that alienated people because they were all quiet little mice afraid to give their opinions to our CEO.

I was never once abusive or mean or shrill or sarcastic or any other negative adjective. People are just really super sensitive and you have to try to blend in with corporate America.

Hard for me because I never really blend in as a redhead!

I have always felt like an oddball in most situations, and especially at work.

I am so sorry to hear you lost your job, that sucks big time.
I hope you find a much better one soon.
Sending positive thoughts and good vibes your way.

It's called being polite and courteous. It's called getting along with your co-workers. It seems this is not the first time you have had this kind of problem if I remember correctly. Just something to think about.

Are you talking to me? Cause I didn't start the thread.

littlewonder -> RE: SO tired of Political correctness (11/4/2012 9:09:06 PM)

FR

yeah, not being able to say whatever is on your mind at work sucks, but would that contribute to the productivity of the company or organization you work for? probably not.

i used to work with a person that i'd known for years and i loved her to death, but i thought she was lazy and too chatty and left common areas messy. did i ever tell her that, in those exact, mean-spirited words? of course not. i held my tongue and came up with a workplace appropriate way to let her and my supervisor know in order to come up with a viable solution for all parties involved. part of being an adult means you learn to filter things before you speak. i'm pretty outspoken and opinionated, but there's a way to convey your feelings without stepping out of the boundaries of what is PC. my two cents.

edited for spelling. twice.

Uhhhh....China is the example they used for plain speaking? Really?

Anyone who has spent any time at all in Asia knows that those people have made an art form of spending entire generations not saying what they mean to each other. Many would often die, first.

We are far, far more direct in our contracts than anyone else. We do it very well. absolut put it best: understanding how to communicate in a fashion that gets the most out of your colleagues, subordinates, and superiors is not about sensitivity, it's about productivity. And we are, by far, the most productive people in the world, dollar for dollar (mostly because we don't take vacations like other developed nations, but that's another thing).

It sounds like you have yet to learn how to be non PC with tact. It is possible. It is also possible to keep some of your opinions to yourself. Especially if they offer nothing productive or positive to the environment.

I am one of the most non PC, least worried about what others think, outspoken people, I know. But sometimes, knowing when to keep my mouth shut, really is the better part of valour. And it makes my work day a helluva lot easier.

If the other people that work in this building knew one tenth of what flows through my brain on a daily basis..........my ass would be out the door.

OsideGirl -> RE: SO tired of Political correctness (11/5/2012 8:06:56 AM)

Yeah but....

We know someone that was given a written warning for a fart. He is not a "fart humor" kind of guy. Walking down the hall and it snuck out. He apologized and said "excuse me". The woman went to HR and complained.

That is just ridiculous and pathetic.
