A Utah Republican fundraiser charged with sexually assaulting women he met online committed suicide on Tuesday, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said Greg Peterson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the very same Heber, Utah cabin where he hosted political events and allegedly raped at least two of his five alleged victims.

Peterson, 37, was facing 25 charges of assault, rape and kidnapping related to attacks on the women. If convicted, Peterson could have been sent to prison for the rest of his life. Peterson was released from jail on Friday after posting $2 million in bond.

Utah authorities charged Peterson with the crimes in July and said he met several of his alleged victims on Mormon dating websites. The attacks allegedly took place in March, July and December of 2011 and April 2012. It wasn’t clear when the fifth attack allegedly took place.

As TPM reported, one 2011 Peterson event featured Utah Sens. Orrin Hatch (R) and Mike Lee (R), Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R) and Gov. Gary Herbert (R).

Romney's campaign has been chock-full of weird creepy sex crime or LGBT discrimination.

Maybe we should throw on some magic underpants and get our rut on and see what this is all about, eh?

While I hate being judge and jury, I've always believed that people that get charged with heinous crimes and then, pull the plug are probably guilty. So, I see a dead raping scumbag. That's the good kind.

I noticed the muckraker (appropriately named) didn't hesitate to throw in a sentence about other republicans being at an event with this republican fund raiser. That was shocking! It also had the extra benefit of allowing the "journalist" to try to paint a lovely "guilt by association" picture. Fail fucking sauce.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

You're being WAY too modest.

Ah... confederates.

How specious... just because wingnuts think every time they see a name mentioned within a mile of a controversial story, it doesn't mean the rest of us are stupid.

I see one wingnut dead. Cover an eye and tell me how many you see.

The thing is, Republicans are fucking up and getting caught dirty, naked, or perverse in some manner yet to be described,
liberals don't NEED to do guilt by association.
Gawd!

It appears that the alleged victims got justice.

This is true, but is the opposite true? and if true, is it true in equal measure?

But is not a suicide similar to a confession gotten under torture? Accusations can kill the innocent as well.

epiphiny43 -> RE: GOP Fundraiser commits suicide (10/24/2012 6:13:58 PM)

Someone fatally depressed by an accusation of violence or immorality isn't unusual, whether it's true or not. Seeing that there are 5 separate accusations at different times makes the chance it is a plot or mistake 'less likely'. But waiting to hear more of the story as details come out is simple respect for any person. News accounts have been wrong, distorted or manipulated a time or two? Whatever the real story and outcome it seems a tragedy for a number of lives.

TheHeretic -> RE: GOP Fundraiser commits suicide (10/24/2012 6:23:52 PM)

Well, it's certainly nice that the supporters of the President, and his fan club abroad, can find such weighty issues to discuss, right before the election.

The guy who hosted President Obama's very first political meet-n-greet at the start of his career was a fucking terrorist bomber. Perhaps you could tell us why you find this incident worthy of note, Lucy?

tazzygirl -> RE: GOP Fundraiser commits suicide (10/24/2012 6:29:54 PM)

Can you explain why its not politically relevant, Rich? Not everything is about the upcoming Presidential election.

TheHeretic -> RE: GOP Fundraiser commits suicide (10/24/2012 6:39:31 PM)

So you are thinking it was just a general purpose, "here's a smear we can point at Republicans," sort of post, Tazzy?

It's less than two weeks until we get the opportunity to replace this failed administration, that cannot run on anything except increasingly petty and schoolyardish attacks on the opponent. Yeah. It's election related

Certainly we have seen more trivial threads in these parts Rich.
Is there any particular reason you felt the need to question the validity of this one ?
What, precisely, about this one caught your eye ?

Who posted it, but that doesn't seem like the measure it once was. I am optimistic we'll see a return to normal, hopefully by the time I've put three stars in for every level of Angry Birds Star Wars. [;)]

FR

It seems to me as P&R-worthy as a T-shirt typo, another O'Keefe video, or an Election Night invitation. But then my standards for Internet discourse aren't the highest.

As for the timing, didn't it happen yesterday? That would seem to qualify as news.

Perhaps you can try to figure it out for yourself Rich. Instead of making strawmen up to fit your agenda, and pasting all with a tarry brush
I also posted a thread on women dying more often because of childbirth complications..without any political mention at all.
SInce when did I have to explain my reasons for posting anything.
Cant a foreigner post what they find interesting?
Cant a poster post on people topping themselves?
Would you have preferred I explain why I post everytime?
I thought you enjoyed guesstimating on peoples reasons.
Oh and it didnt come from an Obama Truth Team email either!!![;)]

In the Seven Mysteries of Profound Love, the NDE Experience thread I wrote "It should be evident to those here that sex is often impure, unwholesome, and devoid of goodness." We today are encouraged to stamp out evil, but is that what we are doing? Are we stamping out evil? I do not think so. In her accusations woman is made fiendish. You cannot harm another without doing harm to oneself, even if it is so called justice. In the suicide the harm was made real, a tragedy with no satisfactory outcome that is best forgotten. A tragedy by its nature has no satisfactory outcome. We have forgotten this. We play God and think we have what it takes to bring justice to the wicked when we don't.

I too hope that once the President is re-elected rationality returns to some formerly reasonable posters with a right wing bent...of course things could go the other way, some who I have ,in the past, thought reasonable could go further round the bend.
