One of the greatest men of conscience in modern politics, a war hero who led countless bombing missions in WWII, yet had the courage to call BOTH parties on their real motives in Vietnam. A man who let his public image smart to bring an honest dialogue has died this morning. If he was running today we'd get him a lot better than America did when it counted.
My Dad, was George's campaign coordinator here in RI, and I had the privilege of meeting George during the summer before I entered college. He was a marvelous man and a real lover of this country and his people.
I have one more post to clean up, and I think I will take the rest of the day off from this place.

Senator McGovern ran in the first presidential race I remember, that of 1972. I was in grade school. One day, a classmate on the bus talked with fervor about how crazy McGovern was for thinking we could just exit out of Vietnam in 90 days. (The student was, I realize now, probably parroting his parents.) Not long afterward, I caught a commercial in which McGovern calmly explained that the French had withdrawn from Vietnam in a speedy, successful manner and that we could too. It was an important political lesson: What you hear on the bus (or at the water cooler or on a message board) probably isn't the whole story.

Oh my gosh, what a wonderful family legacy that your Dad organized for McGovern and that you met him.

As so many fortunate of my generation, my first, proudest and most precious presidential vote was for George McGovern.
The man who Bobby Kennedy called "the most decent man in the Senate." the "prarie populist," the war hero, the peace candidate who achieved nomination of a major political party.

Oct 16,2012, when it was first announced that McGovern had entered hospice, Charles Pierce wrote a moving tribute to McGovern:
"The Forgotten Legacy of George McGovern" Pierce reprinted McGovern's nomination acceptance speech "Come Home America."
It still brings tears to my eyes. I was thinking on Oct 16 that I hoped McGovern was still alert enough to be read Pierce's tribute and,
in his final hours, once again be reminded of how much so many Americans always cherished him.

Senator Bob Dole wrote a lovely tribute to McGovern for the Washington Post.

It's a reminder of a time when folks crossed the aisle to serve the common good.

Politics has been worse off since the Senator left that arena. RIP Sen. McGovern.

That's really cool you lived those moments. They were historic. And in some ways, a last stand against the world that unfolds in front of us now.

I went out to the Island and spent most of the with Dad. He was somber and at one point poured us two single malts and said; "To the greatest politician of my generation to dodge the assassin's bullet".

RIP Senator McGovern. He had a respect for individual liberty that is seldom seen these days.

For those who might be interested, "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" by Hunter S. Thompson is a strange and possibly somewhat accurate account of McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign.

We must be of a similar age,'72 was also my first Presidential election(13 in '72,I can remember Bobby Kennedy;s assassination,but the ins and outs of the 68 campaign aren't there though I vaguely remember the Chicago riots at the DNC).
I remember being aware that McGovern didn't stand a chance after the Eagleton(sp?) fiasco.Even as a political neophyteI knew enough to know that you can not say you are baking the man 1,000 % one day and accept his stepping down the next and still have any hope.
After Eagleton I knew Nixon would be re-elected....and being young,as well as a genius,I knew that was a very,very bad thing.Nixon and his crowds whole "your country,love it or leave it"credo was,as far as I was concerned,the exact oppisite of what this country was supposed to be about.
If one loved his country,as Senator McGovern did,he should be able to point out when and where it lost it's way....as Senator McGovern did.
Rest in Peace Sir....you were a good man who just might have,if given the chance,led us to a better place

His viewpoint on American politics as valid today, as when he first stated it.

I liked the guy, and was set to lay the vote on him, but when he backed away from Eagleton, after saying he would back him 1000 percent........I had to let go. I imagine that haunted him the rest of his life. That one mistake.
