defiantbadgirl -> foreign telemarketing calls (10/12/2012 5:01:57 PM)

I keep getting telemarketing calls from people that have such heavy accents I can barely understand them. They always claim I requested information about......I think it's either diet pills or a supplement maybe? Anyway, I've told them I'm not interested and to remove me from their calling list, but they won't stop calling. I know refusing to remove someone from a calling list is illegal in the US, but I'm pretty sure they're calling from another country. How do I get them to stop calling?

MsLadySue -> RE: foreign telemarketing calls (10/12/2012 5:15:15 PM)

I don't know what can be done legally to stop them, but one person I know uses a very loud whistle to blast their ears. Seems the calls stop coming after a few of those.

You can sign up on the National Do Not Call Registry and it will thin out many of the telemarketer calls if you are in the U.S. But even this does not stop all the calls....but it is a lot better being on the list than not being on it.I have AT&T for my home phone and they offer a call blocker service that works great...if it's the same number time after time. But it only allows you to block 10 numbers at one time. You can check with your servive provider to see what they offer.I'm not sure how well they work now,but my ex had one of these and it worked well. But this was when they were all using a robo-dialer to place the calls.

If it's not a number you recognize, just let it go to voice mail. They'll hang up. If they're calling your cell phone, I believe you can reject then block that number.

My telephone is there for MY convenience. It is NOT there so people I don't know and don't want to know can interrupt me, invade my privacy, aggravate me and try to get me to buy stuff I don't want.

National Do Not Call List, block on phone. Easy.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: foreign telemarketing calls (10/12/2012 8:58:37 PM)

I know it's easy with American call centers. I thought Do Not Call laws could only be enforced when the call centers were located in the United States. How do you sue a call center located in another country?

littlewonder -> RE: foreign telemarketing calls (10/12/2012 9:12:50 PM)

They're owned by an American company

Based on accents? Sounds to me like they're cheap immigrant labor. What proof do you have that they're international calls aside from the accents?

Moonhead -> RE: foreign telemarketing calls (10/13/2012 9:14:57 AM)

I doubt she has any proof, Steven, but call centre staff are one of the first white collar jobs to be heavily outsourced*, so if it's a Boer or Indian accent, they're probably not immigrants resident in the 'States...

*(I recall a stand up comedian over here finishing a show by wondering if the Mumbai bombers of a year or two back really were Islamists, or just pissed off former call centre operatives with a chip on their shoulders.)

littlewonder -> RE: foreign telemarketing calls (10/13/2012 1:15:07 PM)

I remember a few years ago there was a documentary this guy made who took a job as a telemarketer in India where the company (don't remember which one) had outsourced to. It was interesting to watch. I remember him saying that many times it's the only jobs that are available but they must go through a lot of training to speak English and like an American. They go through cultural training as well.

Alecta -> RE: foreign telemarketing calls (10/13/2012 5:00:28 PM)

i keep getting calls about the Windows 7 maintenance I'd requested or some such nonsense.... we're a Mac household.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: foreign telemarketing calls (10/13/2012 9:52:45 PM)

If it's a # I don't recognize, I simply don't answer. I haven't had a landline in over 3 yrs, and just with the cell was great. Until they made cell phone #s available to every Tom, Dick & Harry company. Now I get telemarketing calls every day. My cell phone provider does not allow me to block #s, all I can do is change my phone #. Not going to do that. Glad I have call display.

ETA: Certain telemarketing calls will still be allowed through. Charities, newspapers, a few others. You can request to be put on their own DNC lists. It can take up to 31 days for this to become effective.

It's a scam. Microsoft does not call homes.

I don't know what kind of phone you have but if you can download apps there are some that can block numbers for you.

Alecta -> RE: foreign telemarketing calls (10/13/2012 11:43:28 PM)

I know. Also, Mac household. I thought the funny was self-evident.

TNDommeK -> RE: foreign telemarketing calls (10/14/2012 3:22:20 PM)

We have a land line, all of us have cell phones. What's funny is one of the girls will troll the telemarketers that call. But the whistle thing is priceless, I might have to try that one.

I have an android phone, so I'll have to check the apps available. The cell company itself doesn't make blocking possible.
