lilmissdefiant -> Game of Thrones (10/12/2012 2:12:29 AM)

Anybody else here love this show?

if you do were you pissed that they killed off Drogo (the hottest guy in it) via an infection and not in a battle, the way a true warrior should go out?

DeviantlyD -> RE: Game of Thrones (10/12/2012 2:17:52 AM)

Way to ruin the books for me. You should at least put up "spoiler alert" at the start of your post. Thanks.

And a thread has been done before. http://www.collarchat.com/m_4024325/tm.htm

From here, I can see the complete 1st season sitting on the shelf across the room but it's been awhile since I watched it. Can't remember who Drogo is (odd that I can't recall "the hottest guy in it"....) but I do seem to recall this is the show that's sposta have George Dubya's (?) head on a pike. If so, I missed it and should watch it again just for that.... lol

Focus.

He is one big hunk o' man.

A ordinary sized pic cannot contain his awesomeness!

kiwisub12 -> RE: Game of Thrones (10/12/2012 6:26:54 AM)

Yum ..... and he looked great in dreadlocks as well in one of the scifi shows. - Stargate Atlantis i think.

cuckjayjay -> RE: Game of Thrones (10/12/2012 4:43:06 PM)

I often fantasize about Daenerys Targaryen cuckolding me and using me as her slave.

Of course. HBO should do Memory, Sorrow and Thorn at some point. Right after the Wheel of Time. And ahead of Sword of Truth. [:D]

Now it's (Drogo's pic) all come back to me....

Lmd; reminds me of Ronon of "Stargate Atlantis" fame - and no-one killed him off, despite all the killing he did. Ok, that one episode, but he didn't stay dead for long...!

You're not into Sci-fi?

Hehehehe I have the complete series of Stargate Atlantis [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

it was actually because of Jason Mamoa (aka Ronan, aka Drogo) that I got into Game of Thrones.

Ack.
I know you're a lot smarter than me AS, but I gotta disagree (vehemently at that) with you here. That series is dreck and nigh unreadable to boot.

Now, give Chris Nolan William Gibsons sprawl trilogy and then you'll be cooking with gas. That shit would rock.

And since we're talking confession time and all, yeah, I'm a huge GoT geek (As in I participate in a few online forums re GoT and have done so for ages. I know waaaay more about those books than is reasonable, and probably healthy). As in I got into it when the first book came out and have followed the series for damn near two decades since. I don't really think he'll finish it, but rather die ala Jordan first, which will piss me off bigtime.

It would be fun watching HBO take on Zelazny's Amber series, the first one with Corwin, not that add on crap Roger did later just for the cash.

Which one? I mentioned three. And I'm not smarter, just more annoying. [:D]

I actually thought the sprawl trilogy rocked as-is, Nomeuromancer being my favorite.

Dogfight and Winter Market were also excellent, while Gernsback and Belonging Kind were merely great.

I can recite a few pages of MS&T and WOT, and am generally guilty of a similar degree of geekiness there.

Possibly. Rather see Farseer than Amber, really.

You know what I love about GoT? Well, everything, but the fact that the accents vary according to whether the characters are from the north or south. It's a level of nuance I wouldn't have expected.

Kana chooses option C-all of the above.
I don't like Tad Williams style or plotting. And it's not that I haven't tried. I own all three of the books and despite repeated attempts can't get into em at all.
I feel the same way bout Terry Goodkind

I'm somewhat with you on the WoT (At least the Jordan ones-I can't abide the Sanderson versions). Been following those suckers since Day 1 also.
I love Mat Cauthon, think he's one of the great characters in fantasy history, but much of the non-Mat dialogue is pretty wooden and flat. It would be a tough series to turn into flat screen stuff. Whereas Martin was an ex TV guy and I've always felt he wrote GoT with at least 1/2 an eye towards doing a screenplay

Lucifyre -> RE: Game of Thrones (10/14/2012 9:09:10 AM)

If the greedy fucker would quit writing about food for crap sake he could finish the damn books and make his fanbase happy.
Sadly I think at this point anything else he writes in the book series is going to be a rush job and is going to suck worse than the last 2 books.
I gobbled up the first one and couldn't get enough...then his writing style changed and he jumped around way too much to hold much of my attention but I still slogged through. Then out came A Dance and I couldn't even make it past halfway.

Great stuff coming out of the gate, but someone shot that horse in the leg partway through the race. The end is too predictable and won't get finished. And it's not nearly good enough to survive with a hugenormous fanbase like Star Wars did and make a come back for a second wind 25 years later.

Dance is OK. I think the key with both that and AFFC is that they are the inbetween books, setting things up for the final two or three books when it all comes together (Kinda like 1/2 blood prince was the weakest of the Harry Potter books).
Now, as for the end being predictable, I dunno. GRRM has a habit of killing of characters who you thought were integral to the plot and going his own direction. To his credit, I think he's stayed essentially true to his original vision and it's gotta be remembered that he has stated publicly:
A-That he knew and knows how its going to end from the moment he started writing and that nothing has changed there
B-That he knows who's going end up on the throne and that "it's the unlikliest person of all."

Now personally, I think it would be the best ending ever if he went full circle and the book ended something like "And Jaime Lannister sat on the throne and waited to see who would come take it?"

SPOILERS AHEAD-YOU ARE NOW WARNED

And if you do think it's predictable, tell me,
Who is gonna be Azhor Azhai?
Who's the Prince that was Promised?
What's up with Varys? Is he really a secret Blackfyre?
Does Littlefinger work for The faceless Men or the Bank of Braavos? And whats his game anyways?
And what's the Maesters game?
At this point, the pawns are mostly gone from the game and the true players are emerging. But what's their motivation?

And those are just the obvious ones to start with.

Now, that said, yeah, I think GRRM has gone for the cash grab and spent waaaay to much time doing SciFi conventions and dicking around and that DwD didn't move nearly fast enough for me-that I thought dany should be headed to Westeros by the end, or at least have solved the Meerenese knot. That he hasn't finished that storyline is bogging down the books. But I think I can see where he's heading so that gives me hope.
But if that cocksmoker dies before finishing, after the WoT fiasco, I might be done with starting series until they are finished.

He needs more kicks from his editors, and I was hoping that HBO would kick him in the right direction. Its sad when your main reason for hoping some guy lives is that he can finish the stories before he dies.

Michael...

Oh come on: there's a load of other fantasy series to work through before getting onto Tad William's horribly turn of the '90's PC Tolkein revamp or Robert Jordan.
I'd second the suggestion about Amber (and third and fourth the one about not getting into the later dreck as well), but there's plenty of others that spring to mind: a Corum (both trilogies) telly series would work rather nicely, and Elric might yet be doable if the latest film attempt stalls, then there's Michael Scott Rohan's Winter Of The World trilogy, "Robert Faulcon"'s Night Stalker series, shitloads of comics, Kim Newman's Rihard Jeperson stories and Jack Vance's Lyonesse, for a start...

Thaz -> RE: Game of Thrones (10/14/2012 11:47:14 AM)

My vote would be for 'The Black Company'.

I am enjoying the series of GoT which IMHO is if anything better than the newer books at least...a rare thing.

I second Kana's comments about what will happen if the rancid old coot dies before he finishes the damn thing....

Moonhead -> RE: Game of Thrones (10/14/2012 11:49:06 AM)

But Neil Gaiman said that he is not your bitch: he's under no obligation to finish the series he's been working on for over a decade before he croaks, after all...

Kana -> RE: Game of Thrones (10/14/2012 12:31:13 PM)

I was gonna say Elric (Probably my favorite series as a kid), but just having reread a bunch of Moorcock (Hawkmoon, Elric, John Daker) I can't really suggest him after busting on Williams because Moorcock's writing is far worse. It's basically pulp. And you have no idea how much that hurts to say but it's true.
GRRM's big problem is that he has written one of the few, if only guys, who can be compared to Tolkien, both in vastness of vision and quality of writing. It's my humble opinion that Storm of Swords might just be the best fantasy novel ever written, and that's even with, and in many ways because, the horrifying shadow of The Red Wedding looming over the entire book.
It's a book that was tough to read, tougher to reread (Cuz the RW), but maaaaaaaaan, talk about taking balls to write. Give Martin kudos there-he hit so high that it's almost impossible to reach that bar again.
