kalikshama -> Medical Use of Marijuana on the ballot in Massachusetts (9/25/2012 7:52:04 AM)

While researching my other ballot thread, I discovered the three ballot questions in my state this year. The links have summaries and arguments. I'll be voting YES on all three.

1. Availability of Motor Vehicle Repair Information

A YES VOTE would enact the proposed law requiring motor vehicle manufacturers to allow vehicle owners and independent repair facilities in Massachusetts to have access to the same vehicle diagnostic and repair information made available to the manufacturers’ Massachusetts dealers and authorized repair facilities.

A NO VOTE would make no change in existing laws.

2. Prescribing Medication to End Life

A YES VOTE would enact the proposed law allowing a physician licensed in Massachusetts to prescribe medication, at the request of a terminally-ill patient meeting certain conditions, to end that person’s life.

A NO VOTE would make no change in existing laws.

3. Medical Use of Marijuana

A YES VOTE would enact the proposed law eliminating state criminal and civil penalties related to the medical use of marijuana, allowing patients meeting certain conditions to obtain marijuana produced and distributed by new state-regulated centers or, in specific hardship cases, to grow marijuana for their own use.

A NO VOTE would make no change in existing laws.

Oregon passed a right to die measure some time ago, and it has been tied up in litigation and politics ever since, altho the Supremes upheld the law in 2006. Turns out the right to life crowd just can't stand the idea of anyone being allowed to make their own decision about when and how to die. Once again, the fundies (or fundies in undies, in the case of Mormons) feel the need to save us from ourselves.
In my state, which has been a medical marijuana state for years, there is a ballot measure to legalize and tax. Sounds like a viable replacement for the liquor stores that were voted out in the last election, when their was a ballot measure to privatize liquor sales.

Here at work, we've been fascinated with the public response to question #2 in what no one can deny is a VERY Catholic state. The Archdiocese of Massachusetts has come out strongly against the initiative, yet, it's almost difficult in polling voters to find Catholics (or any other group) under 50 that are strongly opposed to the question and there are many who've indicated to researchers canvassing  that they are against Question 2 personally, they may not actually vote on the question.
It will be interesting to see what the outcome is.

I too will be voting Yes on all 3 measure.

And it's funny, this perhaps only the second time I have had a tangible connection to the referenda. And on two, there's some real bittersweet irony here. My best friend in the whole world has two cancers running through his body and while he's given us the respite of agreeing to a chemo regimen that while it won't cure him, it will alleviate symptoms and perhaps put this off another six months or a year. He approached us all with the concept of ending his life when he becomes unable to deal with the matter when the time comes and there was a protocol established , but had it fallen upon me, I honestly don't know if I could have.

Without this law, it would have been a criminal act. And while the whole police/prosecutorial thing doesn't scare me, not finishing the job of raising the two kids I've alone due to the obvious specter of incarceration, should it come to that. I was both relieved and gratified this came along when it did. And I will have to admit that I now feel strange when after all these years of talking about this issue, I was never passionate regarding it.
However now, having looked my friend in the eye, and really considered what it all means on a personal level. And on a final note, it's funny, all these years I've been involved in public efforts to legalize marijuana, I find myself in an ironic position. I was at MassCann's very first meeting in a grow store in Worcester when there were only about 6 people in attendance. I even was one of the very "in your face" guys when it came to convince Steve Epstein, who drafts much of their legal documentation and initiatives (brilliantly, I might add) urging him to influence the rest of the group to take the hard route of decrim or legalization first (I have since dropped off from the group to raise kids ... big time commitment was involved). And now, when it looks like MedMJ is around the corner, the one person I know that might truly benefit, is just too damned sick to take advantage of it in the forms I could get it for him.

With all of this said, I would like to ask any of my Massachusetts neighbors if they can find it in their hearts, regardless of who you support in the races, to please make it to the polls and please support Ballot Question 2.

My mother was a devout Catholic until 30 or so years ago and supports # 2 and 3. I don't know her stance on # 1. We're Unitarians now.

Are you saying there is controversy in the Lsutheran Church concerning Auto Repair Kali? [:D]

kalikshama -> RE: Medical Use of Marijuana on the ballot in Massachusetts (9/26/2012 6:44:17 AM)

Lol, # 2 and 3 have come up in conversation; # 1 has not :)

kalikshama -> RE: Medical Use of Marijuana on the ballot in Massachusetts (10/2/2012 6:47:11 AM)

Mom is Yes for # 1 as well. The opposing argument made no sense to her whatsoever.

I've talked to a number of people who are normally apolitical, but will be voting due to these ballot initiatives. I'm hoping to convince them to vote for Elizabeth Warren while they are there.

The powdered sugar won't fly fly off the doughnuts when you careen around a corner at those speeds.

As a dutiful daughter, I am quite interested in the study that shows using marijuana medically kills old people. Please link.

as a child of the 70's and a geezer of the 10's I do not believe that such a link would be valid, in the face of my proof.

a better life thru chemicals.

If he actually SAID that, he might be able to find a link. However that is NOT what he said. There are two things on the ballot: one the ability to kill old people and one to be able to smoke dope for medicinal purposes. He never said one was caused by the other.

kalikshama -> RE: Medical Use of Marijuana on the ballot in Massachusetts (10/2/2012 2:49:50 PM)

I guess I was confused because the physicians in the Prescribing Medication to End Life initiative are not the patients in the Medical Use of Marijuana proposal. Rob appears to have contructed a logically impossible Venn diagram.

The correct saying Ron is thus...."better living with chemistry"
I would appreciate it if you would not mangle it in the future [:)]

This is opening up a can of worms. I am all for medically prescribed as it has been proven smoking the drug is the best delivery system and it is excellent in controlling nausea. But growing your own is unnecessary and will be abused.

How so ?

kalikshama -> RE: Medical Use of Marijuana on the ballot in Massachusetts (10/2/2012 4:27:18 PM)

"The proposed law would require DPH to issue a cultivation registration to a qualifying patient whose access to a treatment center is limited by financial hardship, physical inability to access reasonable transportation, or distance. This would allow the patient or caregiver to grow only enough plants, in a closed, locked facility, for a 60-day supply of marijuana for the patient’s own use."
