kalikshama -> Please help stop September 15 deadline for death of Harp Seals at Aquarium des Iles, Quebec, Canada (9/13/2012 5:56:32 AM)

Target: Honorable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Ottawa, Email: [email protected]

Sponsored by: Pedro Baranda, Island Wildlife Natural Care Center

We are writing to urge you and your organizations to take immediate steps to help save the lives of Zak and Mika, two captive 6-month old Harp Seals pups. They were captured from the wild this spring as newborn pups by Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO-MPO) for the purpose of providing them to the Aquarium des Iles in Quebec for tourism display.

A summer worker who assisted with their daily care discovered the fate of her charges and has also contacted several animal rights groups to help. We learned of this situation from our associate at the Brigitte Bardot Foundation. While we are a Western Canada marine mammal hospital and not in a position to provide a habitat for these animals, we are trying to help as much as possible. We contacted the Aquarium des Iles to receive background information. They confirmed that the story was accurate. The aquarium admitted they knew in advance the pups would have to be killed after they’ve outlived their summer usefulness (the reason cited was because of the potential for contamination).

We are almost speechless by this aquarium’s loathsome and self-serving attitude towards wildlife. While we do not condone wild animals held in captivity, a responsible aquarium will, at the very least, provide year-round habitats.

Our investigations have also shown that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans has permitted seals that have been in human care at other Eastern Canada facilities to be released in 2012. We also understand that this will be an annual event.

We have written our plea to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Please add your voice. Urge them to ALLOW ZAK AND MIKA TO RETURN TO THEIR WILD HABITAT. Also let the Aquarium des Isles know that you disapprove.

There is little time. The Aquarium des Iles say they will be euthanized by September 15.

Holy crap. So they caught two baby seals with the intention of displaying them for a season and then putting them down? How on earth can they justify that?

yourdarkdesire -> RE: Please help stop September 15 deadline for death of Harp Seals at Aquarium des Iles, Quebec, Canada (9/13/2012 7:02:55 AM)

Easy Athena. You are talking about Quebec here. They do what they want and to hell with everyone else. They are the province that wants to break up Canada, and become their own country, because they are special.

I guess that they want to eat the fish themselves?

This is one of them sob internet stories for cry-babies.

However, these three acts will be truly worthwile contributions to your world and populations:

1. Repair the road in front of your house - or even around the corner.
2. Convince your population for every woman to have no more than one offspring. (I assure you that will make lots of seal babies happy.)
3. Pick up the litter in your area and put it in the garbage disposal.

I dunno...something seems a bit off here about this story.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Please help stop September 15 deadline for death of Harp Seals at Aquarium des Iles, Quebec, Canada (9/14/2012 2:17:21 AM)

I strongly doubt that Canadian politicians are any different than American politicians in that; if you can't vote in Canada, they probably don't give a fat rat's ass what your opinion is.

As a matter of fact, as someone who has been involved in the petition process here, a non-valid/fraudulent signature can void a whole page of signatures on a petition (depending upon how it's set up).

I won't be signing this petition. Je me souviens!

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I have no children and no intention of having any. I am also a single child and my mother is a single child.

I often do, and I also sign petitions online to try to help stop animal abuse, you do not have to do either or, you can do both.

I wish you well

Why doesn't he simply buy the pair of seals? Then he would not have to bother tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people, wasting their time, with this completely unimportant case. The bastard ought to be prosecuted for wasting these thousands of man hours - and he ought to pay me for the time I have spent on this issue.

Please note that these seal pups are no longer under a death watch! This is the latest info from Aquarium des Iles: PLEASE READ!!!!!!!!!!

12 hours agoAn invitation to contribute to the welfare of Aquarium des Iles sealsMagdalen Islands (Havre-Aubert), 14th of September 2012 – For the last 25 years, the Aquarium des Iles has acquired, under permit from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, two harp seals for the purposes of providing education and outreach activities about the biodiversity of the Gulf of St Lawrence ecosystem to the general public. In the past, these seals were released in the wild during the fall, but this year, for the first time, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) did not allow the aquarium to release the seals at the end of the operating season. This was to avoid the risk of disease transmission to other marine mammals, particularly those species in the Gulf that are vulnerable or endangered. Aware of these risks and of the recent interest in the welfare of the seals, Zak and Mika, expressed by several persons, the Aquarium des Iles is seeking the necessary financial means for the seal’s care until their transfer to another organization that could take good care of them year round. The Aquarium des Iles is a nonprofit organization opened seasonally. Its mission includes public awareness of the biodiversity of the St. Lawrence Gulf, to promote understanding and actions on environmental challenges: pollution, resource management, climate change, etc. Presently, the Aquarium des Iles does not have the financial means to provide optimal living conditions for seals and other species outside its seasonal opening period. Marine species were usually released at sea at the end of the season, including harp seals. However, according to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the release of the seals in the environment poses a risk of contamination not only to the seal herd, but also to other marine mammals that are endangered (e.g. beluga whale, blue whale, etc.). It is now forbidden to the Aquarium des Iles to release the seals in their natural environment, especially as their release does not ensure their survival at sea.Currently, efforts and discussion are being made to transfer the seals to an appropriate institution that can care for the animals year round. However, this process generates significant costs and time delays, that the Aquarium des Iles cannot face alone. We’re aware that a petition was recently launched on the web seeking to find a solution to this situation. To ensure the welfare of Zak and Mika, the Aquarium des Iles two seals, until they can be transported to a new aquarium, we are urgently seeking financial support from all the people who signed the petition in order to achieve the funding goal of $ 73,000. This amount corresponds to the daily needs for food, employees caring for the seals and their diet, infrastructure utilization costs, essential elements to ensure the animal’s well-being until their transfer. The web site http://aquariumdesiles.ca/ will allow participating to this fundraising, which needs to be completed by September 21th.With a new mission in 2012, the Aquarium of the Islands is committed to the understanding and appreciation of the marine environment of the Magdalen Islands plateau, presenting and highlighting its fauna and flora and the marine resources in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, to raise awareness in the general public.Index of /aquariumdesiles.ca

I wonder if they found this out before or after they captured the baby seals?

ETA - they knew in advance, the bastards!

Seal Pups Kept by Aquarium Until the Cuteness Wore Off, Now Face Slaughter

The Aquarium des Iles were told in advance by DFO-MPO that the seals would NOT be allowed to be released back into the wild after they served the aquarium’s purpose. This purpose was to give the aquarium seasonal display animals to draw tourism. Once their season is over on September 15, by joint agreement, the seals will be executed in the name of ‘research’.

Before I post a petition I always google the topic to attempt to ensure it is legitimate.

Thanks all who signed and double thanks for those who put it on Facebook.

Kalikshama, if you read my previous post, it explains that the aquarium has always been allowed to release these pups in past years. This change only happened this year!
