The web hosting company GoDaddy has been experiencing severe outages today. Many of its members are complaining that their service is down.

How wide this outage spreads is hard to tell, but GoDaddy aknowledged it was having problems on its Twitter stream.

"We're aware of the trouble people are having with our site," it said. "We're working on it."

According to a BusinessWeek story from May 2012, GoDaddy hosts more than 5 million websites and has registered more than 53 million domain names.

Twitter user Anonymous Own3r, who claims to be the leader of security for the hacker collective, said he was behind the attack that brought down the site.

GoDaddy has not said whether these claims are true.

CNN reports that the outage seems to be affecting not only those sites hosted by GoDaddy but also those registered with the company.

The AP puts the number of affected websites at thousands "and possibly millions."

GoDaddy goes down, Anonymous claims responsibility

(CBS News) GoDaddy, the domain registrar and Web hosting company, is down, perhaps taking millions of websites down as a result.

"Status Alert: Hey, all. We're aware of the trouble people are having with our site. We're working on it," @GoDaddy tweeted Monday.

While GoDaddy.com's site is up and running, websites hosted by the company are still experiencing outages.

TechCrunch reports that GoDaddy email addresses are down, as well. The blog suggests customers concerned with that their site has been affected can check online status at Down For Everyone Or Just Me.

A quick call to the company's customer service line resulted in a voice message stating that the company is aware of issues involving several services, including web hosting and emails. The company suggest following its Twitter page for updates.

Twitter accounts claiming to be associated with the hacking group Anonymous claimed responsibility for the attack.

"Basically, every GoDaddy site on the planet just crashed," @TibitXimer tweeted.

"#TangoDown - godaddy.com," @AnonOpsLegion tweeted Monday, claiming that the Twitter account @AnonymousOwn3r was responsible for the breach. "TangoDown" is the term that Anonymous generally uses to signify that a website is down.

"By using / supporting Godaddy, you are supporting censorship of the Internet," @AnonOpsLegion tweeted again later.

GoDaddy was the target of protests after it was discovered that the company supported unpopular bills the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA).

GoDaddy did not immediately respond to CBS News' request for comment.

The company's latest tweet reads,"So many messages, can't get to you all... Sorry to hear all your frustration. We're working feverishly to resolve as soon as possible."

DNS servers were hit. Just checked many domains and all are dead as though they are non-existent....which means DNS resolution is done. Considering how they 'had' multiple and backups, the hows on that get interesting.

...should be back up in an hour....or a week...or two....depending. ;)

Where's Danica? Did she crash daddy's server?

SpaceSpank -> RE: GoDaddy Goes Down, Anonymous Member Takes Responsibility (9/10/2012 6:58:29 PM)

DNS's robustness is actually one of it's weaknesses in some cases.

Often sites will have "multiple" redundant DNS servers, but they all still are fed by a single source. Meaning if you screw up the DNS resolution of that 1 system it will replicate down to the others then out to the internet.

Granted that "should" be an easy fix, but it depends on the nature of the issue. Sometimes companies feel it's better to leave it broken while they figure out "how" it is broken as opposed to fixing it and then letting it get broken again repeatedly.

Not sure where they are but my Time Warner Cable internet was out for about 4-5 hours yesterday afternoon and this is very rare as it rarely goes out for more than a few minutes at a time.

LOL

I will say that when Danica crashed a couple of weeks ago it really looked like she was deliberately taken out. Those guys are good but sure looked like a deliberate hit to me.

I actually enjoyed the race a month ago on the road course. It had right turns. I wonder if the shoe thrower got in trouble?

That was the first race I watched in a looooooooog time. I used to watch a lot of racing but not much anymore. It's too tame now. Best race ever was when Petty finished 1st backwards in the infield hood and Cale steaming in for second bot cars destroyed.
