If you feel it is wrong for tax dollars to pay for the sex change operation of a convicted murderer, please sign this petition.

I recommend first reading at least the summary in the judge's opinion, which is downloadable from: http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2012/09/04/judge-orders-sex-change-operation-for-federal-prisoner/

I do not care what reasons the judge had for making his decision. If it was following law, the law needs to be changed, and I will do all I can to see that it happens. In the meantime, signing this petition made me feel like I did something.

Others may or may not agree, which is fine.

I felt the same way you did when I first heard about the story but changed my mind after learning more about the medical and legal issues.

From what I have read (and I have to admit I hadn't heard about this before tonight) it seems to me that the real insanity is that regular Americans don't have the same automatic right to decent medical care. I'm not signing anything either way since I'm not a US taxpayer and shouldn't get a vote, but rather than focusing on why this person is getting treatment, some thought should be given to why law abiding people are not.

I'd sign the petition but personally I feel online petitions don't do much at all. However, I think this will somehow be overturned. I don't look for it to happen. If he were not in prison he would have to pay for it himself and if he couldn't get the money, what would he do? I agree it's a waste of taxpayers' dollars.

There are way too many people against this ruling. It won't stand.

And I am going to say that Susan Powter already had a sex change operation.

Exactly! Which is why it's so repugnant that tax payers should have to pay for a criminal to have something that so many Americans don't even have access to. I have a "friend" (long story) who is in need of mental health care. He seems to be one of these people who has fallen through the cracks and can't get access. He can't get work, his ex-wife fucked him over royally and he's no longer able to get work in his field, so he's really floundering. Yet a convicted murderer is somehow more entitled than my friend? It isn't right. If this transgendered person wants surgery, etc. than that person can pay for it themselves, just like law abiding citizens do.

WTF?

1. Judges do not reverse their own rulings. He's made his decision, and he's done with it. If you want the ruling changed, appeal it to the court above him. Judges do not revisit their own cases.
2. A good judge will not care about petitions. He will not care about what you think, what his governor thinks, or what Obama thinks. He will only care about the law, and how the law requires his case to be decided.
3. If you truly want to have the verdict changed, there are only two ways. Either you show that his verdict does not hold with existing law, or you lobby your Congressman and Senator to pass a new law which prohibits this kind of thing.

Yep, I have to say that this is pretty much my position too.

I went to create a petition and found one already there, so I signed it. I am going to look in to writing the correct politicians ASAP, but my mind is occupied for a while doing all I can do to keep the two thugs that beat my aunt to death in prison.

Getting sent to prison is what many Americans use for a health plan. I'm dead serious.

I guess that basest standard of living is still too good for all of us non-criminals on the outside. I wouldn't call it hypocrisy, though. I'm sure the same people that oppose universal health care also appose health care for prisoners.
