kalikshama -> Petition: CNN: Fire Sexist Contributor (9/5/2012 7:06:29 PM)

http://thinkprogress.org/media/2012/09/05/801441/erickson-sexist/

This afternoon, in just over one hour, 23,000 people signed a petition asking CNN to fire contributor Erick Erickson.

His offense? He referred to the Democrats’ packed list of female speakers at their convention in Charlotte, North Carolina as “the Vagina Monologues”:

[image]http://cloudfront.mediamatters.org/static/images/item/20120904-ericksonvagina.jpg[/image]

After a flurry of furious tweets, Erickson — who once said he “kind of like[d] the idea” that women are barred from a golf club so that he wasn’t “hanging out at some women’s event” — half-heartedly expressed regret for his comment, saying “My apologies to those offended by my tweet. Wasn’t my intention.”

But UltraViolet, a women’s advocacy group, launched the petition calling on CNN to “Take him off the air right away” for his sexist line. “Seriously?” the petition reads, “He hears powerful, eloquent women talking about crucial issues and that’s his reaction?”

Among the “Vagina Monologues” that Erickson was referring to were speeches by Sec. of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius; Congressional candidate and double-amputee Iraq veteran Tammy Duckworth; and the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama.

...Among his numerous past inflammatory statements, Erickson launched a series of sexist attacks on feminists during the 2010 Super Bowl.

That year, a TV ad featuring quarterback Tim Tebow had been rumored to contain an anti-abortion rights message. When the ad aired and was not as pointed as expected, Erickson tweeted, "That's what the feminazis were enraged over? ... That's what being too ugly to get a date does to your brain" and "Ugly feminists return to their kitchens." He continued his attacks the next day.

CNN and MSNBC won't have anyone left if they keep firing everyone.

Michelle Obama's speech last night at the Democratic National Convention was amazing. So were fair pay champion Lilly Ledbetter's and Iraq war hero Tammy Duckworth's. All of these women spoke powerfully about the need for pay equity, the importance of health care reform, and reproductive freedom for women.

And CNN contributor Erick Erickson's reaction to all these inspiring women? He tweeted: "First night of the Vagina Monologues in Charlotte going as expected."

Seriously? He hears powerful, eloquent women talking about crucial issues and that's his reaction? Perhaps it shouldn't be that surprising, given his history of insulting women. Earlier this year, he defended Rush Limbaugh's attacks on Sandra Fluke, saying "her testimony before congress that American taxpayers should subsidize the sexual habits of Georgetown Law School students because, God forbid, they should stop having sex if they cannot afford the pills themselves."

Erick Erickson is paid by CNN to offer conservative viewpoints--but he repeatedly offers sexist and offensive commentary. Enough is enough: CNN must fire him right away.

Sign the petition today.

Tell CNN:

Fire Erick Erickson. His comments about women leaders at the Democratic National Convention were sexist and reprehensible, and just one example in a long history of similarly offensive comments. Take him off the air right away.

I wish she would have said that we as a nation are better off now that we were four years ago.

Wow, who would have thought it would be so easy to get women all upset... I mean there wasn't a blockbuster play on Broadway with the same name or anything...[8|]

So do I as it's the truth as truthful as if Mitt
gets in he'll turn back the clock and
do the same shit that got us into the
mess in the first place.

Winterapple -> RE: Petition: CNN: Fire Sexist Contributor (9/6/2012 12:43:17 AM)

I had never heard of the guy before when
I hear Erick Erickson I think Erik Erikson
who was a brilliant man.

Googling informed me he's a blogger
who once called Justice Souter a goat
fucking child molester. So, he's obviously
a classy guy. Photographs of him
showed a deep irony in him calling
anyone ugly.

He seems to be stealing Rush's act
right down to feminazis. Obnoxious
remarks and stupid jokes to show
what a outrageous bad boy he is.

His material is really stale and he gives
every indication of being a dim bulb.
He'll burn out on his own or return to
the fringes soon enough.

There's a bigger blockbuster on B'way called "THE BOOK OF MORMON" and it illustrates quite clearly why NO MORMON SHOULD EVER HOLD OFFICE. Basically, they're insane. They BELIEVE that ancient Jews built boats and sailed to America, setting up camp in upstate NY. AND that when they die, if they're good, they get their own planet.

With crazy Un-American beliefs like Mitt Romney holds, the "Baptizing Dead Jews" thing is almost trivial.

But it isn't of course.

The line that's been said at the DNC is that we're better off than we were three years ago. The premise being that it took a year before Obama's policies kicked in.

Apparently, it's the old double-standard. When a woman says it, it's okay. Kind of like the ridiculous law they tried to pass in NYC until Fat AL(bert) Sharpton wanted black people excluded from the law.

It's like me, being of German, Cherokee, and Irish descent being allowed to use such "offensive" words as "Kraut", "Indian", and "Mick" and catching no flac for it. It's preposterous and it only helps to fortify the culture of victimization that we've been building in this country for at least 30 years.

I may even start a pettition supporting the rights of people to not be hounded by the self-appointed "Thought/Speech Police".

This country is in a shit ton of trouble if we don't start getting back to worrying about what's really important.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Still, I'd say their monologues were better than the prick monologues of the men at the RNC convention.

Aylee -> RE: Petition: CNN: Fire Sexist Contributor (9/6/2012 6:21:14 AM)

I am thinking that perhaps it was not such a good idea for Code Pink to dress as giant floppy vaginas to protest the RNC.

Really, what did they think was going to happen?

Lucylastic -> RE: Petition: CNN: Fire Sexist Contributor (9/6/2012 6:23:53 AM)

Bill Clinton just impregnated Sandra Fluke backstage. *Ann Coulter Tweet*
When a follower responded to Coulter, asking if Fluke was "the most exciting speaker at the DNC tonight," Coulter responded, "They're spicing things up with a live abortion on stage!"

Coulter has gone after Fluke in the past. She called her a "hysterical drama queen" in a March 2012 interview after Rush Limbaugh attacked the student for advocating for insurance-covered contraception.

Bigsqueezer -> RE: Petition: CNN: Fire Sexist Contributor (9/6/2012 6:24:34 AM)

@ servantforuse - CNN/MSNBC RUN OUT OF PUNDITS? No one runs out of things to say on TV - not even if they used pundits as an alternative fuel source.

So because some women wear vagina costumes it's ok to refer to the speeches given by a completely different set of women as Vagina Monologues?

But of course Kali!!!![;)][;)][;)][;)]
now he is backtracking, what a surprise.. he tweeted
"My apologies to those offended by my tweet. Wasn't my intention," he wrote. His apology, though, did little to mollify his critics.
