For most non gun people, I would recomend a revolver. Since I know you, I would find a dealer who will let you order from shotgun news cheap. Buy a used Czech Bruno CZ 83 in 9x18 Makarov, out the door for less than $250 and a far better pistol than many others. However, I bet they will let you rent something as you DO want to try a bunch of stuff first. If you want a full power 9mm, buy the best, a Browning P35. I have thus spoken...

Yeah, on the gun forum the East German version is treated like a Unicorn and the Chinese version is the Holy Grail. I will say it's super accurate and reliable. I've put over 1,000 rounds through it and there hasn't been a single malfunction. Plus it's super easy to take apart and maintain.

Omg, first congrats on the green card and second...YOU ARE SPEAKING MY LINGO!!! Sorry for getting so excited, I just love guns. We have about hundred over here,well probably like 75 or so. Anyway, I would saw a good first gun would be a 38 snubnose. It is my favorite, it's light enough for me but when a potential threat sees it, they fucking run. Living in Memphis, I have only had to show it twice. Now when I took the gun class I used a 380. Those are smaller. Now if you wanna talk about rifles, a high point 9mm is awesome, and looks cool too. It's an assault rifle. My favorite gun in the whole world would be a 50 cal. desert eagle, which I would never be able to shoot because it would probably break my hands and face, but it is sooo pretty.

I just sold a smith and wesson stainless .460 talk about a hog leg, that musta been a good 8.5 pounds.

Python .357 with a 6'' barrel & hogue grip. It's a competition standard revolver off the shelf. Shoots like a dream. Othe than that a Colt M1911. Oh a Mossburg pump for home defence & an AR16 A4. is all you'll ever need.

The best recommendations here so far have been to choose a revolver and/or a .22 caliber. A .22 can work for self defense but it's not ideal. I recommend a .357 magnum with at least a 4 inch barrel. It's more versatile than anything else I can think of though a .22 is versatile also. You can shoot .38's in it and if you think you can handle the recoil you can try .357's. Get a quality medium frame such as Smith and Wesson, Ruger, or a Colt. There are others but with those manufacturers you will generally have a quality piece, even if you buy a used one. Don't get hung up on price. Spend the extra money to get quality. You can always change the grips to better fit your hand. Though it may be a bit heavy for some should you decide to carry, since you're a female you can get a special purse for a concealed handgun that makes a larger heavier handgun easier to tote around and fast to grab. A .357 is ideal if you want to have a large variety of ammo types to select from. For target shooting you can get cheap .38's and you can hunt with it if you have a 6 inch barrel though a 6 inch is not ideal to carry it's best for targets and hunting. Revolvers are simple and I think a better choice for newbies though many experienced shooters like them as well. My primary carry gun is a Ruger Security Six 2 7/8 inch .357 with Glasser safety slugs.

Lol people on CM don't like guns huh? Michael is right that revolvers -right now- aren't my thing. I mean -and this may totally sound retarded- I don't like the looks of them. They're just too "old Western movie" in my thought association and I'd feel sorta butch having one. I also don't think that I'd like the cylinder magazine. I see myself being more of a "magazine clip" kinda gall. I'll obviously try them, to see if I end up changing my mind, but on the visual alone they're pretty much a "no" in my book. Is it silly that I think the esthetics of a gun are important? And is it something I'm going to get over once I start firing them? I have certain guns I just love the looks off and others I really can't care less about. I just think a gun should really look like a gun... it's just that I have this "absolute form" in my head of what a gun is supposed to look like, and I've got no idea what that translates to in reality. I just know it when I see it.

I just know it when I see it. Try both, and see what happens. The important thing is to find one that fits your hand well, and feels balanced when held and fired. Your tastes may change as you go down the road, and pretty is as pretty does. Pretty doesn't cut it if you're not comfortable with it, and it doesn't do the job. I like to carry my S&W .357 revolver as it's simple, easy to clean and shoot, conceals beautifully, and will NEVER jam like a semi-auto might. There's a lot of work breaking down a semi-auto, cleaning it, then putting it back together. I'm too lazy for that, at least at this point in my life.
