About two weeks ago I saw, and tried to gently remove, what appeared to be two little, black specs on the screen, but could not, so they are on the inside of the screen. The PC/screen has not been damaged in any way.

Since then, while they have retained the basic shapes with which they began, they have grown and thickened, and kind of look like Etch-a-Sketch markings. What in the heck is this? Have I got computer cooties? What do I do?

Mold? You may have a very small "crack" in the screen. It sounds like you're growing fungus on the interior of the screen.

If it's an LCD it is probably dead pixels on the screen. If they are each individually square or rectangle shapes it's pretty much guaranteed to be the case.

More often than not these do not come back to life, and if it's starting to spread it means the panel is starting to die.

Only fix is a new monitor. If it's new you can possibly exchange it, but unless you're very lucky most warranties do not cover dead/stuck pixels.

There's no crack, and the shapes are neither square nor rectangular.

if they are blotchy, it then you make have actually broken the screen. Each pixel is filled with a liquid (hence liquid crystal), breaking them will be much like cracking an ink pen. The amount depends how many are broken.

I'm not sure why they would start popping on their own, but I suppose it's possible. All of these would be under the top protective layer.

Whatever it is, it appears it's unfortunately not fixable. If it doesn't get any worse, and you can live it, it's not harming anything.

If not, decent monitors have come WAY down in price in the last year, and places like Newegg are constantly having sales and promotions on monitors. If you sign up for their "e-blasts", you'll get a daily email describing what's on sale. Once you find something you like, you can unsubscribe.

The other place that carries a ton of monitors and has lots of sales is Dell.

If you have a local Costco, that's also a decent place to look, and they do have that 90 days no questions asked full refund policy if you don't like what you buy.

The one thing that's certain is that unless there's something exceptional about your monitor, it's not worth paying money to have it repaired.

It's a Dell PC, and once upon a time some computer guy told me the screens were not replaceable. I don't know if that's actually true or not.

It isn't that screens are not replaceable, it's that the cost to do so would almost always exceed the price of buying a brand new one.

Sounds like you cracked the inside of the monitor somehow...maybe heat or dust or maybe water of some kind. You could replace the monitor but like others have said, cheaper to just buy a new computer.

I wasn't being pedantic; it just makes a difference. If it's a PC, you buy a new monitor. If it's a laptop, you buy a new laptop.

If you have an external hard drive handy, I strongly recommend you remove all the stuff you want to save from that laptop, while you still can. There are also (still, I think) online storage space services where you can store files, photos, etc.

How new is it?

You can replace laptop screens, but it would need to be pretty new to be all that worthwhile. It would generally cost you at least a couple hundred to get it fixed, if not more.

Dells are odd beasts. If you get the low/mid end stuff it tends to be crap. If you get the high end stuff it tends to be decent but way too overpriced.

They have a narrow range of not crap, yet not overpriced.

And then you have the off years where everything they touch turns into liquid shit and you're not getting anything good regardless.

Very inconsistent build quality they have across their various lines.

I had two laptops in the past that died on me. One died because the ac was on the bottom and even with a cooling fan under it, it still heated up and died. The other one was a crap piece from the beginning, having to have service come out to fix it three times in the first 3 months that I owned it.

I now have a Lenovo and it's the best laptop I've ever had. For now on I think I will stick to Lenovo unless something comes out that's better.

The best option in situations like this to look up Ebay for a laptop same model which is not functioning but the screen is intact. be careful of scams though. Use PayPal as they provide good protection and a guarantee to get your money back if you did not receive what was advertised. As you know EBay is a bidding system so make sure you don't pay more than 10% the price of the laptop when you bought it new.

Only problem I see with this is that it doesn't sound like dead pixels. So it's possible the issue is affecting the screen, but isn't the screen itself.

Unless it's new enough to still be worth a fair bit. it's probably a safer bet just to get a new laptop.

Hey y'all, thanks for all your help and suggestions. Guess it's that time to begin searching for another laptop.
