butchered birds and rabbits for food...
I've operated on myself for crying out loud...
I've put down animals to put them out of misery...

You are mistaken, it was not a brag, but a testament as to what was taught me in Agricultural College, decades ago. All such courses were required to become a Veterinarian. Most any Vet older that 40 has likely had to do that sort of thing. No one's asking you to like or support, but that is the way it was.

It was the hard farming and caretaking involved that I missed, not mutilation. I miss being physically able to work that hard.

I grew up on a farm with all sorts of critters.. I dont remember this but when i was a little kid, my parents found me up on a wagon and a bunch of roosters were pecking at my eyes.. I was just a little kid, no idea what age but I must have been quite young since i dont remember.. if i look really close i can still see the tiny scars around my brown eyes.. they are not noticable to anyone else tho.. sorta scary that those roosters could have caused me serious damage..

I have a lot of scars from growing up on the farm, one under my eye from a cat scratching me & scars on my arm from a feral cat biting me.. but i still like cats.. roosters not so much..

I can tell you right now, "Nightmares" isn't
what I get from this sort of attitude...
Whatever farm life you've experienced and
the fact it was a necessary part of the job
doesn't make it any less monstrous.

Besause someones livelihood requires them
to disconnect compassion and treat these
animals like soulless fucking meat thats not
fat enough to die yet, isn't a excuse it's only
an explanation.

So people have to cram animals ontop of each
other and then cut there beaks off so they
don't damage each other just to compete in
the market place isn't an excuse it's only
an explanation.

And not a very fucking impressive one.

Status: offline 		on the farm i grew up on we had free range chickens.. no beaking and they were grain fed so they got good food.. our cows were babied.. they were very well taken care of since they were dairy cows.. the boy calves were castrated tho.. and our piggies were fed good food too, when we had piggies.. my father grew alfafa for the critters.. and fed them grain and stuff from the garden like the corn stalks.. In the end tho, the grown calves and pigs were sold off to be on someones dinner plate... and some of the critters ended up on our plates too, of course..

I actually became a vegetarian when i was a kid living there, my family thought i was nuts.. I wouldnt eat them.. I couldnt eat my pets.. My first boyfriend (when i moved to the city) didnt mind dating and living with a farmers daughter.. he got to eat the home grown huge steaks, bacon, chickens, turkeys, etc that my parents would bring when they came to visit me..

Seriously Peon? Did I really need to read this before having my breakie on a nice Sunday morning????

Actually, I think lots of people could have their own fish farm in their back yard.. it just takes something like one of those cheapie above ground pools ya can buy for a few hundred dollars.. and water and a few baby fishies (or baby shrimps, etc)..

Status: offline 		It's not surprising. I have heard stories about how rude and nasty and down right dangerous ornery roosters have been.


When I was a young kid we were at my cousins house and we had to feed their pot belly pig, and it chased us and "treed us" on top of its dog house, cause it was kinda mean and kept taking a run at us.

You should have seen the programme I saw on on the BBC with Ray Mears, our resident survival expert. He broke open a rotten log, gathered up all the woodlice, fried them in butter, and scoffed the lot. I'm telling you, they looked delicious. Ray himself said that they tasted like peanuts. Lots of protein in them. (And Ray is *fat* - a commendation on the quality and taste of a man's diet in anyone's book, I'd say.)

Me, I've got a gut like an incinerator and taste buds to match. I enjoy eating almost anything put in front of me (aside from beetroot and sprouts). Yep, no fear at all - I'd eat a plate of fried woodlice, with appropriate sprinklings of salt, pepper and herbs. Yummies!

Status: offline 		I've eaten chocolate covered ants, and bbq flavored meal worm, and had a lollipop with with a grasshopper in it, complete with its eyes still in it.

Insects can be pretty tasty if you fix them right. I haven't tried any others than the few I listed but depending on what it was, how it looked, and how it tasted I'd try it.
