This is as good as it gets -- 8 percent unemployment, and economic growth of 1.7 percent.

That projection for 2013 was embedded in a sprawling economic report released this week by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, and it underscored how dire the economic forecast looks.

The figures cited above reflect a sort of best-case scenario for the U.S. economy next year. Only if lawmakers avert a wave of scheduled tax hikes and only if lawmakers stop a battle ax of cuts to the Defense Department and other areas can the economy achieve 8 percent unemployment and 1.7 percent growth.

In normal times, those would be dour figures.

But here's the alternative. The CBO projected in its report that if Congress does nothing -- meaning, if it allows the tax hikes and spending cuts to go into effect -- the economy could dip back into recession.

Without any changes, the report projected the economy would contract by .5 percent by the end of 2013, and unemployment would rise to 9.1 percent. The jobless rate is 8.3 percent now.

"CBO expects that such fiscal tightening would lead to what will probably be deemed a recession, with growth in GDP declining in 2013," the report said.

The CBO outlined in stark terms the choice for policymakers, who aren't likely to get to the business of addressing the problem until after the election, in a last-minute, lame-duck session.
On one hand, they could let the economy take the hit and endure the possibility of recession. In exchange, the deficit is projected to drop from $1.1 trillion this year to $641 billion next year.

If, though, they decide to extend the Bush-era tax rates and put off the spending cuts, lawmakers can avert the projected recession. But in exchange for the just-modest economic growth, the deficit next year could be nearly $400 billion bigger. That means the deficit would top $1 trillion for the fifth straight year, with the national debt already on track to hit $16 trillion any day now.

"Diverting from that path to continue current tax and spending policies would improve the economic outlook in the short run but would boost deficits and debt significantly and would place the budget on a path that is ultimately unsustainable," the CBO report warned.

So, what does this mean for Romney and Co?

What would you call it if your predictions come true and we have a president Romney?

No, No, it is all GW Bush's fault.
Seriously speaking, it is a result of long-term policies starting perhaps with Reagan. Obama has not much to do with it. He tries to put out fires. Being totally incompetent in these matters, he can not succeed. Advisory team can not be trusted. The banking lobby has been the strongest, shifting the policies towards their benefit.
Whoever wins the White House will be tied with economic disaster management. Obama administration method (money printing, borrowing) will inevitably end soon as they need to protect the dollar. Some kind of austerity will be inevitable. The only hope is the cuts will not be done by the lobby groups but they will be for common benefit (perhaps too much to ask).

WTF? The Fox article shows two scenarios:

1. Extend Bush tax cuts and don't cut spending. Just continue our course.

2. Stop the Bush tax cuts and cut spending.

Nowhere is Obama's proposal of extending the tax cuts for all but the wealthiest, examined. It's as though his proposal doesn't exist.

With a Romney administrsation, I'd call to true hope and change. If Obama wins this election it will be four more years of the same failed policies.

When it fails to generate significant stimulation will you still be worshiping the Mittster?

Business will begin to hire again once Romney ends the very expensive Obamacare. Paul Ryan will take care of the rest. And yes, I do think that Michele Bachman is attractive.

Romney's plans also call for the same kind of tax cuts for the wealthy that failed under Bush and put the country into a recession. Why will they revive the economy under Romney when they destroyed the economy under Bush?

Because its meaningless. Even Obama has admitted that the tax increases on the wealthy are meaningless for debt/deficit reduction. And in one of his unscripted moments admitted it is just a matter of "fairness", not economics.

Ummmm, because they didnt? And no one with any understanding of the economics of last decade tries to maintain they did?

How do you even know if it's failed after a mere four years, anyway?

Fixing what GWB saddled you with isn't a four year project.

It wasn't the tax cuts that did that.

Mr Obama said he could fix it in 3 years. He gave the answer for failing to do so. Was he sandbagging then or now?

This was also based on the assumption that Republicans in general would do whats in the best interest of the nation, and NOT, for an ideology hell bent on destruction! That the GOP would be ruled by level headed individuals willing to work with Democrats to find acceptable compromises that help the nation's problems quickly and efficiently.

But as history shows, the GOP did anything and everything short of out right treason to stop the president on a whole host of issues. The country be damned if it means they get the White House and Congress. That is not the game play of a sane or wise group of adults. Its even more disappointing that the folks they represent across this great nation, are even....worst....than they are on a wide range of issues and talents.

So if you wish to play little petty games, while ignoring the recent history, go ahead. Just do not be surprised when we treat you like a child in the future.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever looked into what it would take to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act?

Once you actually know what it is you are talking about, get back to us, will you?

Obviously you enjoy neglecting facts, but the "deal" as it sits is a poison pill that was agreed to by your heros on the right in Congress.

Now, that being said, their obsessive defense spending gets cut, and now they want to deal? Funny how that works, isn't it?
