LookieNoNookie -> Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/22/2012 4:45:16 PM)

I am serious....(really truly...).

I know it seems odd, but there's honestly no punchline.

54....right leg in the calf...feels like needles in it when I'm driving or flying (mostly when I'm flying...but I've ruled out the whole difference in air pressure). Always when I'm sitting. Always the right leg.

Any thoughts?

When I get up and walk (or as I'm driving or flying...shake my right leg...which, as you may imagine, tends to freak out the people in the seats on my left or right)....I'm all good. I've stopped publicly masturbating on flights longer than 2 hours...so that's not it.

I couldn't even describe it 2 months ago and then my Mom called me and told me she had something similar some years back and it felt like "little tiny microscopic needles being stuck a billion times in (her) leg"...that's what it feels like.

Love some advice on the subject.

First thing that comes to mind is your Sciatic nerve. The fact that it only happens when you're sitting could mean the nerve is being pinched... I personally don't have full blown sciatica but occasionally I'll get the pin and needle feeling in my left ass cheek - Dr says for me it's the sciatic nerve. In my case, a good session at the Chiropractor helps to ease things up.

Hmmmm I'd speak to a GP, could be nothing, could be everything.

Though it's probably nothing.

Seriously though, GP

What is that? The sciatic nerve? What is sciatica?

And...chiropractic...what do they do to you that ameliorates this issue?

pyschosubmission -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/22/2012 5:46:58 PM)

The Sciatic Nerve is one of the main nerve branches that exits from the spinal cord at the caudi equinas, travelling inferio-laterally across the pelvis and down the dorsal aspect of the leg. It's path is the reason why posterior injections are given in the upper lateral quadrant of the buttocks.

Boom! There's some med student regurgitation for you

CRYPTICLXVI -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/22/2012 5:50:24 PM)

I have a similar issue on my upper left thigh... except that it happens all the time, just more pronounced when I sit. I did some research online... no, this was months ago and I am not doing it again and I don't remember what it is called. It can happen spontaneously and isn't treatable or it can be an early symptom of diabetes. Don't know if it is the same thing as you are experiencing but I would also suggest seeing a doctor to have it checked out, not that I have.

Lucifyre -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/22/2012 6:38:07 PM)

Both of you need to have your lower backs checked.
I had to have my L5 and S1 vertebre rmoved and replaced and the nerves they were pinching beforehand were similar to what you've described.

Go see a spinal specialist NOT a fucking chiropracter. A chiro will want to "adjust" you and might make it worse.

You might want to look into nutritional deficiencies, mainly calcium, magnesium, potassium, and the B Vitamins, as well as proper hydration.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/22/2012 6:53:07 PM)

Phlebitis? Nerve squish? Consult a professional, hon.

Duskypearls -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/22/2012 6:53:41 PM)

You might want to look into nutritional deficiencies, mainly calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, folate, the B Vitamins, as well as proper hydration, proper blood circulation. Most American diets are lacking in vitamins & minerals to preserve health, and as we age and our digestive system works/absorbs less efficiently, that adds another factor. There is also the factor of what drugs one takes that may deplete vitamins/minerals, as well as the side affects they have.

Duskypearls -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/22/2012 8:16:52 PM)

A Whole Blood Mineral Test and a Vitamin Blood Profile will tell you what you have too much or too little of, so you know what needs adding or reducing. Might be worth the investment.

I don't know much about it, but have you
looked into lower limb thrombosis or deep
vein thrombosis, probably unrelated but I
had a friend that had it recently which made
me think of it.

Agreeing with Aries. Check with a vascular specialist.

lizi -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/22/2012 9:41:26 PM)

My first guess is deep vein thrombosis and second would be nerve problems. DVT is a circulation problem, this could be causing the pins and needles sensation. It is blood clots that form in the blood vessels which could turn into an embolism if it dislodges and begins to move. It will most likely end up in your brain, your heart, or your lungs. When is the last time you had a circulation test done on your legs? DVT is most common in the legs.

Nerve problems are not good to have either, you can end up losing muscle function or an intensification or spreading of the pain.

In either case I urge you to go to the Dr. To me, the things it might be are serious enough to warrant a look.

FrostedFlake -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/22/2012 11:04:09 PM)

Take this one to your doctor.

If he cannot explain it, ask him to send you to someone who can.

Motivational word of the day : ""If that is a clot, and it breaks loose, you will have a stroke.""

Or a heart attack. Or a pulmonary thrombosis. Or, you could, if you are lucky, suddenly lose vision in half of one eye.

In fact, that happened to me. I still have a blind spot the size of my thumb at arms length.

Call for an appointment ASAP.

Kana -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/23/2012 7:12:09 AM)

I have similar issues with Sciatica.
I have turf toe on a big toe. The nerve runs up the inside of my leg, curls around my hips and ends in my buttocks and lower back.
When I drive a lot, it pulls on my arches, which aggravate the Sciatica (As in too the point where I've learned to accelerate/brake with both feet) and the nerve gets pulled all up my leg-ask the lilone, she's always giving me hip rubs...
Acupuncture helps, so do massages and foot pads, ala Dr scholls...

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/23/2012 8:48:06 AM)

What our Frosted said. And I was thinking DVT, not phlebitis. (Do NOT have menopause, JJ, the suck is deep and wide...) anyway, see a doctor kind of person.

lizi -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/23/2012 9:14:53 AM)

The thing that makes me think DVT is that it comes about when your legs are inactive and in a position below your heart, not like when you are lying in bed. It's very common to develop clots in the legs on flights and long car drives because the pumping mechanisms in our veins (skeletal muscle pumps) are inactive during those times.

The pins and needles sensation is probably from the poor circulation at those times when your legs are forced to be inactive and in a dependent position (below your heart), and possibly not receiving blood circulation in the area where this possible thrombus is. I rarely do this, but I'm urging you to see the Dr. This is not something that you should fuck with. If it turns into an embolism - which happens fairly easily, the clot just breaks free or part breaks off - it's likely to lodge somewhere vital because all of our blood runs through the heart, and lungs, and a great part goes up to the brain. When that happens it's literally minutes to death or serious injury. I've heard enough stories from people that have had embolisms and treated them in the hospital to be truly frightened of what they can do.

Over the summer we learned mechanical methods of physical therapy and one of the contraindications for almost all of them was if someone had a thrombus. Because you don't want it to move, so no treating an area with a thrombus with ANYTHING.

At the very least you are probably having trouble with circulation. You need to know this so you can address it and then you can prevent DVT from occurring. If it's the nerve thing that's something you also need to know, although probably less serious. All in all you need to know what's going on here.

To anyone reading this, please prevent clots from forming when you are flying or driving for long periods of time by doing ankle pumps - this is a motion very similar to stepping on the gas when driving. Move your feet at the ankle up and down quickly in a set of ten, three times, every hour at least, every half hour is better. It activates the skeletal muscle pumps in the legs so that blood circulates back up to the heart and doesn't pool in the veins. [:)]

Another real possibility is RLS restless leg syndrome. Given the fact that movement helps it sounds highly probable. My ex was a pilot and had the same issue. It was found to be RLS and a simple pill a day fixed the issue.

MariaB -> RE: Okay...real question....serious shit...need advice.... (8/23/2012 1:44:08 PM)

Go to your doctors because only he/she have the facility to take a blood test and hopefully give you a diagnosis. They will probably do a blood test called a 'D-dimer test' which will shows up the risks of having a DVT.
Pins and needles are often a sign of impaired blood flow but pins and needles alone are not characteristic of a DVT.
