I am going to rent a satellite phone for a trip next year (not trusting my UK mobile in dead zones). Have any of you done that, and is there a company you'd recommend?

Hibbie.. FWIW, I have Tmobile. I had NO ISSUES AT ALL with service overseas. I told them beforehand that I would be international. the charges were negligebile.

My particular phone doesnt have international capability, but we do have mobile phones that we use when we're abroad. My issue is the hinterland... i will NEED to check in at the homestead to keep a meltdown from happening, and miles from a city or cell tower, I don't want to take any chances.

Personally, I don't feel the need for it, but this venture is gonna be a hard sell, so I need to smooth my path.

Ehhh, you know unless you decide to hang around in a particular spot in the road, I've found that the network coverage is pretty good in the UK and no coverage doesn't happen all that much, in fact people tend to complain a lot about them overdoing it...

My UK mobile works fine in the city! And I like to be on the ground with my own stuff, yanno? It's a thing.

Rented one for making personal calls on an odd job assignment once.

Yep, they even work from 300+ miles from land out in the Pacific.

Unless you are heading for somewhere really really out in the middle of nowhere on land, or Oregon, you may have cheaper options.
