Nope, but you didn't care. Old time patent medicines made all kinds of claims, and were generally morphine with some additives I don't want to know about. Some of these products claimed to cure colic and croup in babies.

Can you imagine giving an infant one of these mixtures? They were very popular in the US in the late 1800's and early into the 19th century, and no doubt engendered more than a few morphine addicts.

I'm pretty sure after a dose of this stuff, you forgot how to cough...and how to think. Not only did a lot of these old patent medicines have morphine, a good many had cocaine as well and used a base of alcohol. If you tried giving a child anything like this now, you'd be thrown under the jail...and rightfully so.

DesFIP -> RE: TRAIN WRECK!!! (5/23/2013 8:17:39 AM)

I would imagine that like codeine, they did stop the cough reflex. The problem is that people used them with abandon and became addicted.

I find that I only need a codeine cough syrup for a few days and giving the throat a short rest is enough to end a cough I've had for weeks. But a four ounce bottle here lasts me for years.

I was going to post that one! A few years ago, I saw a recipe for one of those patent medicines, and I'm pawing through my computer trying to find it. From what I remember, one tablespoon would just about put you in a coma.

Paregoric was over the counter and used for coughs, colic and/or diarrhea in youngsters as recently as 1970.

Even as late as our day mothers like mine were rubbing brandy or bourbon into our gums to ease our teething pain.
The good old days [:D]

When I was a kid and had a cold or flu, my mom would give me a shot of Krupnik (honey & herb vodka) and sweet tea. Worked like a charm. And I believe there's still a bottle of Paregoric somewhere in my mom's stuff here.

Even after paragoric was no longer sold in the U.S., it was still sold in Europe. I remember my mother buying it in the chemist's in London to bring home.

You see, this is how that adult baby stuff got started. Two spoonfuls of this stuff and you'll need to be in diapers.

OMG....no Nair for this gal. I burn from it. [:(]

ShaharThorne -> RE: TRAIN WRECK!!! (5/24/2013 4:37:27 PM)

I accidentally cut myself one day and an infection (MRSA to be precise) developed. I can endure 10 minutes of smells.
