Hello everyone, my name is "Marini", and I have adult ADHD.

If you read what I post on here, you can probably tell half the time.
It's VERY rare, that I am not reading or posting, and attempting to do at least two other things.

I don't bother to post as much as I would like, because I don't like to appear "all over the place".
That is why, it is COMMON for me just to read what others have written, and agree with them!

It takes so much energy, to do what I need to do at work, that when I am off/at home, I don't always WANT to have to focus on what I write on a message board.
At work, I am often complemented on "my paper work" at work.
They have no idea, how long it often takes me to complete it!
I am lucky I can do most of my paperwork at home!

When I was a teenager, I used to refer to myself as being like Tigger in Winnie the Pooh

I struggled with creating this post, but I was impressed with the recent threads related to mental health issues, so why not.

I have had ADHD, since birth I believe.
I was walking at 7 1/2 months, I had place to go and I needed to get around.

I was always doing something, and I do mean always.
I FINALLY got my father to admit, that my mother suggested putting me on Ritalin when I was younger/teenager, but he overruled her.

I suspected I have had this for years, but long story short, I was "officially" diagnosed with it a few years ago.
Whenever I read the ADHD checklists, I laugh because I normally have 99% of every symptom on the checklists.

Anyway, one of the MAIN reasons I adore Michael Phelps is because he has ADHD!!!

The # 1 Olympian medal holder of all time, has ADHD just like I do.

Here is a little of the back story of Michael Phelps, that many don't know about Michael.

Article about Michael in Additude mag

Debbie Phelps talking about Michael and ADHD

NY Times- Michael Phelps and the Potential of ADHD!

When I see Michael, I see someone that has what I have "struggled with" ALL of my life, and managed to be the best Olympian swimmer of all times.

When I see Micheal, I see someone that has earned more medals than ANYONE else in Olympian history.

It's great to know the "back story" on people, know a few of you, might look at Michael and Debbie Phelps a bit differently.

Here are a few random ADHD facts:

--Most children that have ADHD as children, also have ADHD as adults.
--- 85% of the Eight million Adults with ADHD in our country are unaware that they have it.
--- Many women are NOT identified or diagnosed with ADHD, because their symptoms are often different.

Here is a great website for more information, if interested.

Additudemag. Living Well with ADHD!!

I will be the ADHD crusader rabbit, until my last day on earth.

Hell yes, I plan on going to the welcome home celebration for my hometown hero, Michael Phelps.

I don't think Debbie Phelps get's another credit for being instrumental in helping young Michael.

Way to go Debbie! Way to go!

Way to go Michael! Way to go!!

Peace

ADHD just means you operate and perceive things a little differently. It's not serious or scary. My son has it, in spades, but he manages to handle himself well enough.

I take hearing about ADHD the same way I hear about someone's drink preference - oh, ok. It's just there, to me.

I will begin on some type of add-type med in 2 weeks.

Thanks for posting this.

Not because he is the most successful Olympians of all time then?

Isn't ADHD one of those things that psychologists diagnose after running out of other ideas as to what is wrong with someone when probably nothing is wrong with them but they are getting paid by the hour and so they have to say something? Imagine if it went something like this:

"Dr I think there is something wrong with our child."
"No I can't see anything wrong"
"OK thanks bye"

Does it ever go like that? They'll find something wrong. Who gets to decide what the personality of a child they don't know should be and how it should be tailored with medication.

If cavemen suffered from ADHD they'd probably be the most successful in the group and they'd be blissfully unaware that anything was wrong with them. There is this perceived norm that if you step outside of then you need some kind of prescription drugs. The boundary conditions that define this norm seem to be getting closer together as the years pass.

Way to go guys, acting as if something is nothing, to someone who got the guts to post something very personal, after seeing the wonderful way the recent mental health threads have gone.

In case you miss it, that is dripping with so much sarcasm that the keys are now sticky on my keyboard.

Marini and anjelika, good luck. Any kind of mental issue is hard to deal with, and even harder to get folks who have not been there to understand and feel empathy for.

Well we've all got to write about things as we see them, it's all a bit pointless otherwise. What do you want my true opinion or some bollocks popular opinion I don't really hold?

Some years ago, before the Web was a part of my life, I voiced my concern to the psychiatrist I was then seeing about my possibly having ADD. He said he didn't know much about it in adults and suggested I do some research. I still remember thinking, "Dude, if I could stake out and undertake a major research project, I wouldn't be sitting here wondering if I had ADD!"

Well done for sharing such a private thing Marini. When I think back to the times I read your posts, I had absolutely no idea you had ADHD or any other condition that made writing them difficult so you should probably be a bit less critical about how your posts appear to others.

Thanks for sharing angelika!

It looks like we only have a handful of members on the message boards with ADHD, or the other ones are too busy to post!!

lol

I have both ADHD and ADD, I think in my case it's 50/50.
Believe me, I CAN'T run around like I did 20-30 years ago.

I will still become the old lady that won't sit still, and forgets things, and is easily distracted.

I love corny ADHD jokes, here is one:
When we go out, my friends know better than to ask me to remember where the car is parked!

If you ever want to chat about ADHD or ADD, my box is open.

Good luck!

Huggles to dc!

ADD is a bitch, isn't it?I often just laugh when I forget what I was doing.
There are some wonderful ADD/ADHD message boards around these days.

I hope you found someone that was qualified to help you.
Thanks for posting.

Thank you MsButtered Butt Biscuit!

I don't think many understand Adult ADHD/ADD, it doesn't get the
attention that Depression tends to get.

What a very kind statement, Anax!
Thank you so much.

Does this mean I get a pass, to jump "all over the place" and no-one will even notice, on here?

Not quite nothing, no, except perhaps in the sense that it's not to be judged or reviled.

I live with it every day through raising my son. He is judged for the ADHD and for his autism. When I treat it casually, it's because I accept it, unlike a lot of the people I take on every day who push prejudicial and thoughtless behaviour towards him.

Acceptance isn't understanding, granted. I do have a personal appreciation for it though, and I've learned quite a bit about it and from it. Whether a person with ADHD accepts it or just plain copes is something else though, and it's a personal business I don't judge either.

I'd say a good few wouldn't notice anyway but do whatever is good for you! Maybe being a bit less careful about writing posts etc. will make the forum a more enjoyable experience, without affecting how you contribute too much!

Thank you for formally saying hello Marini. =3

We've only exchanged a handful of messages, but I love to see your posts! Never would have guess you had ADD (I don't have it, but it runs in my family).

I'm glad that you feel comfortable enough to start a thread like this. And hope to see you post much more often.

Thanks Lana!
One thing I wanted to share was 85% of those with ADHD/ADD don't even know it.

Since Michael Phelps has it, maybe now is the time to spread more awareness!
