Actually, it's a reflection of how pathetic journalism has become.

I can write a press release and have it run unchecked all across the country tomorrow. That's great for business, and for getting my web page on the first page of Google searches.

But it's a sorry state on the quality of "news."

"It's all over the news" means they all repeated the same story without checking it.

How do you figure that, Muse? I mean, yes, journalism is in a sorry state, but my local paper has maybe 5 reporters, who generate 85ish% percent of the unique content. The whole point of a local paper is that they use their resources on local issues. I think they have done a excellent job, all the way through, of covering our new sanitation plant, the controversy over how the tertiary treated water will be used (don't let the kids play in the sprinklers at the park - eww), and the increase in annual fees going onto the property taxes to pay for it.

Not in terms of the quality of the coverage that is local and unique, Muse. They may run announcement copy from the Toastmasters unaltered in the community news announcements, but because they aren't trying to fund a reporter to cover the local girl's races in London, they aren't relying on press releases, or a quickie phone interview with the chair, for what happened at the zoning commission meeting, either.

There is a great deal we can agree on, I'm sure, in what's wrong with the media, and especially TV news. The dumbing down of ideas. The focus on stupid, pop culture, bullshit. We don't seem to agree about the impact of an over-represented set of ideological beliefs, but I think we can settle on the presence of many hacks.

Where we are sticking, is at how a local newspaper makes choices about how they can deliver the best unique product. I don't see that as further evidence of the decline. I see it as the spark that will keep them alive until the next really good business model comes along.

You are arguing the virtues of a local paper. Granted.

Clearly, that's not what I'm talking about. People read "the news" and take it as what's going on, because they see the story everywhere.

And they see that story everywhere because only one person wrote and posted it, while dozens who should know better copy it.

I'm not talking about AP stories either, where there's at least the assumption of vetting (correct or not).

I remember when most cities had at least 2 papers . Some 4 or 5 . News was covered by everyone and if someone got it wrong the where told about it .Now the big papers have bought out the smaller ones so that there is only one left in town . This has made for bad press . There is no one left to keep the big guys honest and they won't cover what they don't like . If a owner is Republican the Democrats are screwed . When papers had to chase after a story to beat out the other guys it was good for the people who read papers . I have seen the Sunday paper go from 3 inches thick to something that looks like I grabbed 2 everyday papers . The news has been cut don to make papers smaller as the price goes up . Why buy a paper when all you get is fashion sports a lot of cars ads and just a small amount of news that someone has sorted through to make their party look good .

The NYT and WSJ. Understanding that there is a bias to all papers, one can glean a lot, both truth and propaganda, depending on one's own bias. My perspective is somewhat Sun Tzu-ish... know thy enemy.
