I have noticed/believed and been observant and cognizant of climate changes/global warming phenomena for years.

I did not read the entire article, but I read bits and pieces of it, and I have also read other articles, if I wasn't already convinced about what is going on, I would be weeping.

I started to read it but the first paragraph showed me that the author has yet to learn the difference between weather, climate, and global Warming. They aren't synonymous.

Hillwilliam -> RE: New Article by Bill McKibben about global warming - read it and weep (7/20/2012 5:26:39 AM)

Weather is part of climate as a tree is to the forest. One is a subset of the other. The first paragraph of the article didn't equivocate the terms. Warming is simply what the climate is doing at this time in the planet's history.
Regardless of whether we are contributing or not, we need to wean ourselves from fossil fuel based energy sources so we can tell the Arabs to go fuck themselves and eat dirt and rocks as they were a bit over a half century ago.

Possibly you should finish reading the story before drawing conclusions. Your post makes as much sense as someone writing a biography of Dickens after only reading the words "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times?

oh ok thanks

I will keep that in mind the next time we have a cold snap and all the al gore fans start crying "todays weather doesn't mean shit"

If you had a clue, you would realize that extreme weather events, both hot and cold, are an indicator that things are changing. This is especially true of Northeastern Europe due to the effects of the North Atlantic gyre..

Hillwilliam -> RE: New Article by Bill McKibben about global warming - read it and weep (7/20/2012 5:32:43 AM)

Again, if you wish to comment on an article, read the fucking article. Failing to do so demonstrates extreme ignorance.

When comparing three or more things, use "among," not "between."

Which changed several times before the Industrial Revolution.

Actually, the Gulf Stream which is the part of the N Atlantic gyre responsible for the fact that NE Europe is habitable was discovered by B Franklin. He noted that mail ships headed to England took substancially less time for the passage than ships headed back this way and hypothesized a "river in the ocean". Prior to that, the notion of large scale oceanic currents was as foreign as a non geocentric universe was to the early Catholics.

Ergo, there is no evidence the N Atlantic gyre has changed prior to the industrial revolution because it was unknown to science.

Several cycles of warming and cooling in NW Europe give indirect evidence.

Several cycles of warming and cooling in NW Europe are indirect evidence of any of a hundred different things including changes in ocean currents. That is not what you said. Your post is only 3 posts up so I won't bother quoting it. You said "Which changed". Don't move goal posts. Had the topic been mean temperature of NW Europe, you would be absolutely correct but that wasn't it.

My whole point in the climate debate has been that if we can wean ourselves from fossil fuels for energy, we can tell the Arabs to go fuck themselves and live in tents. Any prevention of climate change is pure gravy.

Are you stealing my favorite Dickens quote now, mate?
I often just say global warming/climate change/weather patterns, etc. so I can move on into an actual conversation.

This planet could be burning up, blowing up or coming apart, and there will always be those that complain that you are not using the correct terminology.

So much easier to nit pick and split hairs, that to get to a point.

I like to mention I am not a scientist, far from being a scientist, but I can tell there is something rotten in the state of Denmark.
This planet is off kilter, and we common folks are entitled to express our opinions and concerns over it, without being scientists.

The emperor has no clothes on, damn it.

It is indeed the best of times and the worst of times.
Carry on.

I'm trained as a scientist myself. As for my definition, I was simply attempting to explain the terms in the simplest way possible. The planet is definitely off kilter. Unfortunately, there are billions to be made by denying that simple fact. My last sentence was something I quite believe in and is something that the kool-aid drinking deniers have never answered. They get caught in an endless feedback loop unsure whether their hatred of Muslims overrides their need to be good little bitches for their masters at Exxon/Mobile.

Unfortunately, we have the best lawmakers that money can buy and Exxon/Mobile, BP, etc has the most money. Our petrochemical industry is what enables civilization as we know it to exist. If we run out in 100 years (optimistic at present consumption), civilization ends. If we wean ourselves from fossil fuels for energy, we have, within our borders enough oil for millenia. Any environmental benefits (and there will be lots) are pure gravy.

Hill, since you brought up trees,I want to throw this piece I read yesterday into the mix.I am not saying it is right or wrong.

I know in the past the Earth has had periods of warmth and cold for various reasons. But when you have different so called authorities saying totally different things, exactly who do you believe?
