Novice has been depricated. It is now obsolete. It is replaced with the more offensive "noobie" or "noob" for those who really show they are new to something and aren't worth the "ie". Seriously, I think novice is up to the labeler. If I was to label myself I'd be a novice until I felt I had a good level of understanding and competence. As for others, I don't label :D

As for others, I don't label :D I don't like to use labels either, But then, how does one communicate where they in this realm if, for instance, they happen to be someone who has been doing this all of their adult life, as opposed to someone who has recently been introduced to it? I wrote a post some time ago about the language of BDSM and D/S. I mentioned that WIITWD here is very new...or at least the community in very young...and because of that the lexicon hasn't quite caught up yet. I guess some of what we do defies any kind of definition or label.

I use the term Novice in other aspets of my life ad especially in that of the study and practice of the Art Magickal. There I use Novice as a clisificastion of the level of understanding and learning of a person. Form Novice they progress to Aprentice as they gain experience and learning of their tools of the craft, later the tewrm apprentice is dropped and another term applies (depending on what area we are refering to). To traspose this to me regarding this life style, I will say I am a Gorean Master, but as a novice in many areas of BDSM and an Aprentice in a few other areas.... For me it is just an indication on my training and learning progression which icludes experience or the lack of.. The important thing is I know the ways I use these terms as do my Mentor, Neets and close friends in the BDSM and Gorean Scene....

In this case, take the easy way out. When you no longer feel like a novice, stop using the word. When I first started working in a machine shop I asked: "How long does it take to become a Master Machinist?" And I was told; "It takes as long as it takes you to be able to do the work of one." For some, it's ten years experience. For others, it's year one, repeated ten times.
