DeviantlyD -> Scientists May Have Found "God Particle" (7/4/2012 2:11:51 AM)

This both scares me and appeals to my inner geek all at the same time! :D

Edited to add:

I liked this explanation I found on the National Geographic web site.

quote:

Higgs Holds It All Together?

The Higgs boson is one of the final puzzle pieces required for a complete understanding of the standard model of physics—the so-far successful theory that explains how fundamental particles interact with the elementary forces of nature.

The so-called God particle was proposed in the 1960s by physicist Peter Higgs to explain why some particles, such as quarks—building blocks of protons, among other things—and electrons have mass while others, such as the light-carrying photon particle, do not.

Higgs's idea was that the universe is bathed in an invisible field similar to a magnetic field. Every particle feels this field—now known as the Higgs field—but to varying degrees.

If a particle can move through this field with little or no interaction, there will be no drag, and that particle will have little or no mass. Alternatively, if a particle interacts significantly with the Higgs field, it will have a higher mass.

The idea of the Higgs field requires the acceptance of a related particle: the Higgs boson.

According to the standard model, if the Higgs field didn't exist, the universe would be a very different place, said SLAC's Peskin, who isn't involved in the LHC experiments.

"It would be very difficult to form atoms," Peskin said. "So our orderly world, where matter is made of atoms, and electrons form chemical bonds—we wouldn't have that if we did not have the Higgs field."

In other words: no galaxies, no stars, no planets, no life on Earth.

I am watching the press conference live on bbc news24, I think dry would be a good description.
What they are saying I think is that there is still a shit load of research to do and that the world isn't suddenly going to stop turning.
In conclusion don't hold your breath for anything amazing

DeviantlyD -> RE: Scientists May Have Found "God Particle" (7/4/2012 2:47:14 AM)

Pffft! I still think it's exciting. :)

hardcybermaster -> RE: Scientists May Have Found "God Particle" (7/4/2012 2:56:25 AM)

don't get me wrong, so do I, but it's going to be a while before anything comes of this and that's assuming anything does come of it.

I am all for CERN and sending rockets to other planets and mining asteroids etc, it's a better use of money and resources than invading countries and blowing each other up but another part of me thinks all those resources could be better used helping all the people on this planet who are in desperate need right now.

It's a balancing act I guess, we have to investigate otherwise we stand still and don't evolve, lets just hope this stuff does help us evolve

I agree....*sigh*

Yeah, I know....they've had scientists all over my garage for like 6 weeks now.

I think you've misunderstood. The "God Particle" isn't about your penis. :D

Not too familiar with the theory but if I understand correctly, its an odd idea that a field made of particles gives all the other particles in existence mass (or not as with photons)!

Hope it isn't a case that they were on the verge of finding it and then realised some cables were loose! What a "D'oh" moment that would be... oh wait its already happened! [:D]

Lookie,
They are looking for all the hidden bodies at your garage and not the god particle. I hope you are good at hiding things.

littlewonder -> RE: Scientists May Have Found "God Particle" (7/4/2012 2:41:44 PM)

I have been reading all the reports on this and I have been following the developments of this ever since they started the project. I find it exciting and interesting. They still have lots of work to do but it is nice that they are making progress and updating the people about it. I like this kind of stuff because by discovering this we will discover many other new and huge things about the world we live in but it will also bring about more questions which that in itself I love.

Oh pshaw....I stopped keeping my dick in the garage years ago. Concrete is far too cold for my leetle fren.

exciting when the toy blow up & takes away half of Europe with it...

its not exciting... its like soking your hands with gasoline & then play with freekin matches..[>:]

Those pesky scientists leaving mug rings on the table and their diagnostics tools all over the place! [8|]

I suppose LNN could retort that it is in part about his "part"... [8D]

Endivius -> RE: Scientists May Have Found "God Particle" (7/4/2012 9:35:28 PM)

I was so relieved when I realized this was just an ordinary particle and not a surpreme being particle. That would just be icky.
