From what I can see, Romney got handed a real turd on the ACA decision. How does he get past the fact that he spearheaded a similar health care plan in Massachusett, while promising that his first priority, if elected, is to repeal the ACA? Ignoring the fact that eliminating the ACA may not be what the public wants, and even ignoring the fact that a Congress of uncertain makeup may have a thing or two to say about repeal, how does Mitt escape his past?

The record won't let him distance himself from his actions as governor. If he attacks the ACA as an unfair tax or unconstitutional, he will have to admit that it was bad law in Massachusetts also, and that he made a mistake. Who wants a bonehead like that as president? His best bet would be to approach it as a states' right issue, but that is a little esoteric an argument for the average voter.

On the other hand, maybe I am underestimating his creativity, or, more likely, the creativity of his handlers. After all, if the Mormon church can declaim plural marriage, after insisting that it was God's plan, but that God changed his mind, who knows what Mitt may be able to come up with to distance himself from his former fervent belief?

Can't wait for the debates, this should be good.

He did that to himself, before the decision.

What the SC did was point out that mandating expenditures is a tax. That sinks his "I never raised taxes" claim.

While it was smoke and mirrors, I'm glad of calling Congress on the semantics. In NY, Pataki did that shit for years--cut taxes, but raised every imaginable fee and instituted many more.

from keeping segregation to denying
marriage equality. I expect we will hear
arguments in that direction from
opponents of the act.

he's turned over a new leaf and has seen
the error of his ways memo is being
heavily circulated.

Status: offline 		Sorry, I have to disagree that "states' rights" is something the mouth breathers care about or understand. I think it is just a phrase they toss around because they heard it on Rush. I am certainly not saying there aren't intelligent, principled conservatives, because there are. However, I doubt the average voter, in either party,has even read the constitution.

But flip flopping is something they understand, and they don't like it. So, it better be a pretty good memo, winterapple.

That didn't keep peckerwoods from
squealing about them a long before
Rush ever got on the radio.

Because to the average peckerwood state
rights just means the states can tell
the federal government to go fuck itself.
The Founders said so they will assure you.
They don't need to quote no stinkin' clauses
and precedents.

The esoteric fights will be whatever the
right wing think tanks come up with and
will be spread like butter all over right wing
media.

But their mostly going to spin the your
taxes are going to go up, your freedom
is being eroded and the government will
take your kids away from you if their fat
sort of shit.
The Mitt has changed memo has been passed
around to the right since the elders
endorsed him as the candidate.
How effective it is within the party and
independents remains to be seen.
But no one is really voting for Mitt,
their going to vote against Obama.

Status: offline 		Romney should be pushing this off the radar as fast as possible. His hope to unseat Obama will be based on the economy, not health care.

Obama has two positive arguments (and lots of negative ones against Romney, which I'll ignore) to make:

1. The economy's getting better.
2. I'm an effective leader.

Health care gives Obama a chance to claim he's an effective leader. He pushed for something that he saw a need for, rammed it down the GOP's throats when they tried to kill it, and finally prevailed against numerous lawsuits at the state level. He can claim that it's something he did for the people despite the GOP fighting him.

Romney can't win on health care. Not only did he initiate it, but it goes against numerous things he now claims to oppose. Anything he says will reinforce the idea that he has no principles and changes his stands daily. Plus it takes away focus from the economy.

He is saying that he will do it in day one.

The spin on his deal is:  'It was designed for THAT state'. (this somehow makes it differ).
