Status: offline 		Gary got a new computer with his karaoke system this winter.  Unfortunately he hasn't used it much as he spent so much time in the hospital.  Now he's forgotten the password.  He has spent days trying everything he can think of, however, since his mind wasn't that clear due to his illnesses, he hasn't come up with anything.  In other words, none of his normal passwords or combinations are working.  Is there any hope to be able to use this computer again or do we need to get a new one?

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

Status: offline 		or the manufacturer. they may supply a master code. or google for that. there also may be a reset button.

Status: offline 		If it's Windows XP operating system, he should be able to sign in under the
default administrator log in, which doesn't have a password.
Once he logs in as admin, he can then go to Control Panel - Users and reset his password.

Status: offline 		ahh, i wasn't thinking in terms of operating systems. also, holding down F2 while booting up can get you into the bios, or a special menu.

Status: offline 		There are a number of ways to gain access to a computer. Almost every commercially available OS has a way to circumvent the password feature. Additionally, most PC repair places have access to programs that will circumvent the passwords for you. For example, when I worked at Best Buy they had a program called Unlock that was on cd, wich forced the computer to load the program before the OS loaded.

If you want to shoot me a message on the other side I'll try to walk you through it manually.

Status: offline 		He's running windows 7.  I think the best thing to do is take it to an expert.  I was hoping on some really easy way to do it.  At least I know there is hope for it and he won't have to buy another computer.

Status: offline 		Windows XP sign in to administrator using safe mode (f8 on start)
Windows vista or 7, you can get in using a Hirens boot disk which you can find online. Its a bit involved but there is one section (5 or 7 I think) that has something called change passwords.
I break them all the time for people who have forgotten them.
If the password is in the bios you have to open the case and move the jumper from one post to the next. There are many jumpers in the case so look up the area for the correct jumper online.

Status: offline 		OMG!!!!  I have no idea what a jumper is...or how to find out what a bios is.  I talked it over with him this morning.  He's taking it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Status: offline 		Not sure if we'll get to Missoula's munch in July. He's kind of anxious to get his karaoke system up now that the weather is getting nice. He has to do it outside as there's no room in the motor home for all that stuff.

Thanks for the offer. Hopefully, IF we can both stay away from hospitals for awhile we'll be able to get to a munch this summer.
