I don't get many telemarketing calls because I am on every DNC list known to man (and evidently they do work) but if a telemarketer calls and immediately responds when I say "Hello?" then I will be as polite as I possibly can be to them. Sometimes this is not possible and they leave me no option.

If a telemarketer calls and there is a few second lag after I say hello and then I am greeted with their own surprised "Hello?" - indicating that they are phishing through multiple numbers simultaneously waiting for a hit - then I will fuck with them and be extremely rude. Award winningly rude. Simply setting the phone down is for amateurs. This group is the absolute scum of the earth and deserves every ounce of abuse heaped on them. I do not maintain a telephone so that you may conduct your business.

I find them frustrating as heck. Almost all telemarketers (except for registered Australian charities) seem to be off-shored to the Phillipines & India. I've copped some extremely rude responses to "Sorry I'm not interested." I have heard some even have a reputation of calling back and harrassing you further. We are on the DNC register, plus have a silent/unlisted number, so when they do call (presumably because they have old phone records), I feel it's very much my right to be passive aggressive.

I don't get any, since the DNC thing, but when I did get them, I would always let them do their spiel, then I would tell them it was such a shame that they hadn't called a couple weeks earlier, because I had just gotten new carpet, alarm system, new windows, new hardwoods, now roof, etc so on and so forth.

One of the companys that calls my area is a meat company that tells you they sent you a sample of their beef and ask how you enjoyed it. (Ya right, like that's going to happen!) The next part is them trying to get you to purchase a side of beef.

Luckily my colleagues had recently talked about these calls during lunch.

When my turn came to answer "the" call I left the lady speechless. She asked me how I'd enjoyed the sample sent to me by her company and I told her it was absolutely delicious. She was silent for a moment then fumbled for words to tell me she was happy I enjoyed it and thanked me for my time and said goodbye.

Why people think this is better than a simple, "Please do not call again" and hanging up, I'll never know.

I'm with you. I can't recall ever having a problem when I've said "No thank you, and can you please remove me from your list?" Why would I need to be mean-spirited about it?

I also enjoy participating in the political surveys, so I get called fairly often for that reason.

Even though I'm on the "no call list" I still get calls from the same companies again and again.

There are a few options. Even if you can't get them to identify themselves by first name or the company they are calling for (both legal requirements; you are dealing with an idiot if they don't get that out in the first 30 seconds of the call - also a legality), you have the option of call tracing. The police can call the firm whose number is traced on your behalf and press charges if necessary.

I know some telemarketers are jerks; that's the way to deal with them. You can also pursue the DNC issue through the courts if you want, they get heavy fines and you get compensation. I've seen it happen at a few different centres.

If it does happen let me know, I can probably dig up the law particular to your area (in addition to Federal). I'm happy to nip the little bastards in the bud.

I put my number on the DNC list and started getting more telemarketer calls than before.

I did away with my landline over 15 years ago. That was the only time I got telemarketing calls. On my cell phone I think I've only had one maybe once and that was my fault for signing up on a website and putting in my phone. Other than that, not a single telemarketer.

I did this last year. Don't miss the dang thing at all. Blessed silence.

Once in a while I get the odd text or wrong number on the cell but that is nothing compared to a landline I had more than 20 years. You can bet I opted out of the 'new number is...' message when I shut it down.

littlewonder -> RE: Fucking with telemarketers. (6/26/2012 10:39:52 PM)

Oh yeah, I get the occasional wrong number or text but it's because cell phone numbers are recycled. It's rare though and don't bother me. My sisters hated when I got rid of my land line. They felt that for some reason it was a needed necessity. Well....over 15 years and have yet to find it a necessity. lol

KittyCali -> RE: Fucking with telemarketers. (6/27/2012 1:00:24 AM)
