Ok, so my computer has started making some words and phrases "links."  If I hover over them, they are really just advertisements.  I ran my Malware (after making sure it was updated) and it came back with nothing.

I'm planning on running a virus scan tonight when I go to sleep, and see if that turns up anything.

I do know that my youngest cat is fascinated by the computer and regularly jumps on my desk and walks all over the keyboard (or just lays down on it).  He has managed to change all kinds of settings in the past, but I am pretty sure he isn't responsible for this issue.

So anyone have any ideas?

Now that it's fixed: Comodo Firewall and Avast or AVG for virus protection.

I tend towards AVG because I like the "Pirate Talk" language module.

If you are the two-condom type of person then occasionally run Ad-Aware and MalwareBytes for a little extra protection.

Yesterday, I tried using Firefox to see if it would help with the not being able to login to this site issue and noticed the silly "enhanced text" there. I wasn't yet annoyed enough to do anything about it, so thanks for starting this discussion.

I didn't have the Text Enhance Add On or any similar, but the 3rd option, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/ , worked - thanks LW!

glad you fixed it. there is a good extension called linkification, that does automatically make links out of things that are navigable.

I've actually done some fairly extensive research on this.

I have to uninstall AGV and re-install it.  For some reason it is giving me warnings are absolutely everything.  I open Yahoo, warning.  Mail, warning.  It doesn't matter what it is.  I have to figure out how to turn it off.

Oh and I do run Malwarebytes as well, lol.

But the link that littlewonder listed fixed the problem.  I didn't see the exact link, so I disabled anything that I was sure didn't belong.

When you downloaded AVG on your computer, did you dl it from the actual avg site or another site? There is a fake avg out there that is actually a virus and needs to be removed completely from the registry.

Good question.  Something like that I will either download directly from the site or from CNET, since they tend to be trustworthy.

In any case, I am going to remove it completely.  How do I make sure it gets removed from the registry?  That always messes me up.

I see the avg site also has an avg removal software. I guess you could try that first if you don't want to go through the other steps. I don't really know anything about the software or how good it is.

its rarely a good idea for people to mess with the registry but sometimes you have to do it to make sure it doesnt interfere with another install.
Try using a program called REVO uninstaller.
You can remove all traces by selecting all and deleting. It's been successful for me many times and I was so happy with it I bought the pro version.

Not quite on point but CCleaner's registry cleaner (it's a separate button) cleans up files that are left behind from uninstalling programs but doesn't do the actual un-installation. I run it every few months and the regular cleaner weekly or after watching lots of video.
