JstAnotherSub -> pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 11:14:42 AM)

For a couple of weeks, I have been getting insane pop up "pages". I do not even see them until I close my browser, Firefox.

On this site, they tend to be adult friend finder and such. Other sites have brought up things like shopping sites, even recipe sites.

I have blocked them on Firefox, then noticed that they are not actually from Firefox. When I click the little "box" nest to the web address, I get a thing that says use default on about 7 things. I have unchecked use default and clicked block on all of them, yet they still fucking come back. Many of them show I have visited the page before, saying something like 13 times, when I know I have not visited the page. Another tab on that screen shows if the site is storing cookies, and if it is, I clear all the cookies. There is nothing to save the changes as far as I can see.

I have McAfee virus protection, which is up to date and came with the computer. I have Googled and I have run Windows updates and McAfee updates.

I have restarted and I have fucking cussed like a sailor. Nothing makes it stop!!

Anyone have a clue what the hell is causing this?

Yup, windoze.  Dump that mcaffee shit off your computer, and get Comodo Internet Security (it is free) and when it is installed and you have run the scan, go to stealth ports setting in the firewall and hide your incoming ports.

I have an automatic pop up blocker, and I use firefox as well. But on occasion as I am today I use IE and don't have a single pop up or ad jumping in my face.
I don't use McAfee, I prefer Norton and have always used Norton and have never had any issues.

ARIES83 -> RE: pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 11:33:02 AM)

Sounds like someones been surfing in naughty places!
I tend to treat my computers as disposable,
I have pics and movies on a side drive, anything major
Happens to my comp, I just format, but Im very simple
In my computing needs, my current comp is a prehistoric
netbook, i think windows xp takes up half its hard drive...

Still side drive and formating is my advice, works for me.

I don't get any of the pop-ups you are talking about and I use Firefox too. It sounds to me like you have some type of virus or malware. I know you said you have McAffee but one AV program alone is not enough. No single AV program catches everything. You need to have more than one and run them on a regular basis.

I use Malwarebytes, Spybot, Ad-Aware, A-Squared and AVG. Each one specializes in certain virus/malware footprints. With the combination I use I have not had any significant problems and when I pick up a bug one of them finds it and removes it.

I have Windows, and I use both Microsoft Security Essentials, and I've also got Avira. Both I find do the job well.

Sometimes the pop ups cheekily install themselves as programs, so have a look in there as well.

Good luck. [:)]

sounds like malware. You can always run Houscall, http://housecall.trendmicro.com/, until you get better security.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 1:18:49 PM)

Thanks for all the advice. I would hate to just lose the McAfee, mainly because I just renewed the thing about 4 months ago. None of my web surfing habits have changed since I got this computer about 16 months ago, so that is why I am mystified about this new development.

For those of you in the know, will running any of these other malware programs cause problems with the McAfee? I ask because, several years ago with a different computer, I got tired of paying for virus hardware, so I decided to go with a free one. I removed the Norton, or thought I did, and installed the free one. Just a little bit of the Norton being left on the drive caused all hell to break loose, resulting in me being on the phone with Norton, then Microsoft, for a couple of days. Eventually, I think we erased everything off the entire hard drive and I reinstalled everything.

Then I renewed Norton and forgot about using anything free again.

That old computer was a Gateway, and came with Norton installed, This one is Dell and came with the McAfee installed.

RE: post #5

I have all of them installed an don't have any conflicts between them. Yes they are all free ones, but they get the job done. Just don't run more than one at a time.

this is what i suggest also, a mosaic.

i also have spybot blaster, Winpatrol, and Spbot Search and Destroy, and norton.

and on firefox, adblock plus, and no script, which seems to be very important.

sorry op, i forgot. yes, seems like you're infected. wash and rinse, and wash again. get protected better when it's done.

So, temporarily turn off my McAfee before doing the other? Please pardon my ignorance!

MasterG2kTR -> RE: pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 3:47:08 PM)

If it has a Tea-Timer running in the background that should be ok. If it shows a conflict temporarily disable it. What I meant is, you don't want to be doing simultaneous full scans of the drive.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 3:50:57 PM)

Thanks, gonna try now, I just had another one of those damn pages come up.

i have same or similar to you, and do em all at once, no problemo.

hopefull, that doesn't mean they missing something. they serially scan thru a list, so i don't know how that's bad, to run them simultaneously. i think it only matters for some firewall and virus protection programs that are incompatible, cus they are doing the same job, and they attack each other. but scanning, no problemo.

Yeah I have had 2 friends tell me to get a puter with an apple on it and my probs will be solved!

littlewonder -> RE: pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 5:37:02 PM)

When I first bought my new laptop it had a 3 month McAfee trial. I however don't like McAfee so I was running Avast and it conflicted with McAfee. It recognized McAfee as malware lol. So I disabled McAfee.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 5:41:09 PM)

Well I did the malwarebytes one, and it found 9 things, 5 of which it said were trojans. I have been back online for a good while now, and have purposely gone from site to site, and so far, no more pop ups.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 7:29:16 PM)

Well, I got excited too early. On to try some of the other tools suggested here. I should have known the first thing I did wouldn't work!

RemoteUser -> RE: pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 8:05:46 PM)

You'll get there, OP. [:)] There are other systems alternatives than the ones mentioned.

I run off of a little custom Linux/Black OPS XP number I set up last October. The Linux side has never been infected and never will be. The Windows side is still virus free despite porn surfing in the murkiest places. Sometimes it's just a matter of knowing where you're going and what you want to use, when you get there.

Failing that, stretch a condom over your mouse. It may do nothing, but the squeaky sound is just too cool.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: pop up pages!?!?!?!?! (6/22/2012 8:14:29 PM)

I swear I am gonna start surfing porn! I never do, I prefer to read books and let my mind do the visuals.

I did another of the recommended free things on here, and it found nothing. I think I will call McAfee tomorrow, and tell them that if they can't make it go away, I want my money back. This is insane!
