Something someone else said got me thinking about how I perceive this discussion board. Yes, beyond all other descriptions and perceptions, that's what this is.

They were reacting to some thought about stalking. Not in the real life sense, but in the sense of following someone else around and making negative posts. They said, I'm not a stalker, this is just a small board. This post isn't about that though, nor is it about that person, or attacking them.

What got me thinking is the description they used to describe the board. They said this board was a small pond. An apt description, but I believe that thought originally comes from the saying "big fish in a small pond", or the reverse.

So, this thread is about what the board side of CM means to you.

Is this a small pond, and do you see yourself as a big fish, or a small fish (I.e., competitive). Do you think there's pageantry and pomp (good or bad), and feel the need to show you're worthy of BDSM?

Do you see this as a community? (online counts ya know).

Do you feel like you know certain people, certain neighborhoods? Do you enjoy coming to certain neighborhoods, to pick up (or drop off) this or that intellectual property, so to speak.

I can go on with open ended questions, but you get the point. I'm very interested to read your take on it.

I see it more as a coffee shop. Some people you´d want to share a table with, some regulars you enjoy having a chat with, some you don´t want to listen to their conversation but they´re hard to ignore, others you´d drink up and leave if you saw them come in.

Um, it's a messageboard. With kinky people. Some who I consider "friends", others I laugh or snark at. Oh yeah, and it's likle a venue where it's okay to swear.

I don't see it so much as a community, but I do see it as where people let their real selves out.  If it wasn't for these boards, I would have never been on CM so long.

I see it as just plain fun…I like to discuss religion and politics. It is like a debate class in school where I am often defending a view opposite of my own for the sake of argument and in the process learning.
I truly forget who is a dom and who is a slave or sub…they are just people…some good and some bad but luckily many are interesting.

I am comfortable in my views and myself so just stating my position does not make a big or little fish…how I am thought of is up to others and no concern to me…Will let me amend that…I have on occasions wish I had not spoken in anger to someone I respected. Otherwise I do like the idea of being liked but it will not change my views and opinions.

i really admire that you do that! (bolded) i don't do the first, but i do the second one - i really try hard to ignore the sex, gender and self-description of who i'm speaking with, so as to not "pollute" my answer. that doesn't count when an OP is asking for personal advice based on their situation.

funny anecdote to not looking at someone's sex - when i first started posting, someone claimed that i seemed to only argue with women. and around that same time (diff thread?), i was being harangued for not getting the sex correctly of the person i was arguing with.

shit like this reinforces me not caring too much what they say, and realizing, their thoughts and words are more a reflection of how they think others think and their own state, rather than the (anonymous to them) person they're giving their opinion of. in that case, it was (i later realized) a male dom 'coming to the rescue' of all the women i was supposed to be arguing with.

I look at this place as someone where I go to talk openly with friends, and from time to time I have to read posts from idiots, but, that is their opinions as well, and I appreciate the input, if it is constructive. As for the people I enjoy chatting with, I think they are very informative. And yes, it is such an escape from the other side, where there is nothing but maddness and the occasional sense.

It's a comfy, yet interesting, pond. I'm mostly a creature of the politics basement, and I like the mix down there. People come to this site because they have some sort of interest in freaky sex, and those beautiful streaks of mascara, left by the tears. It has nothing to do with our politics, so there is a great variety of thought, coming in the door down there.

Big fish? I don't think I get nearly enough unsolicited pics of nude women to qualify.

As to post stalking, we always have a few players who like to take a dislike to someone, and throw mud. Hell some people enjoy a good mud roll, and go looking for it. Among us old fish, regardless of size, there are often histories that won't make a lick of sense to any more recent arrivals.

I see it as entertainment, a place to go when I'm bored or I can't sleep or I'm putting off doing something.

It's like a replacement for tv when there's nothing on.
