So you're invoking supply and demand again.

Note that MasterG2kTR's post also makes a strong case for supply and demand being the driver of gas prices, and not speculation.

Between the two of you... sounds good. I can concede supply and demand being the driver.

apparently you missed those market price fixing videos that were floating around a few years ago.

Prices are governed by speculator fear and greed, not supply and demand.

I don't care why the price went down...i'm filling my gas tank.

Hey! Guess what?  Gas prices are going down.  i filled up yesterday for $3.25 9/10ths per gallon in New Jersey.  That's down from $3.70 9/10ths a couple of weeks ago.

Lucky you !

I paid $4.47 today in Seattle.

:(

That could be why the FCC has been asked to look into the costs there.

Higher oil production and weakness in economies around the world that are now burning less gasoline and other fuels have helped push down crude prices 14 percent in the last month and 25 percent from a high in February. Reports in recent days of weak job growth in the U.S., a deepening financial crisis in Spain and slowing growth in China have rattled markets.

This week, though, oil began to rise on hopes of a U.S. financial stimulus plan before returning to very close to their recent lows.

Investors thought Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke would unveil a plan to buy bonds or take other measures that would lower interest rates. When borrowing costs fall, it effectively boosts the amount of money in the economy, giving investors cheap money to buy oil and other assets. This also lowers the value of the dollar and makes oil less expensive for overseas buyers.

But Bernanke told Congress Thursday that no plan was imminent. That sent the value of the dollar higher.

Without the prospect of cheap and abundant dollars Friday, investors were left with simple choice: Whether to buy or sell oil based on world supply and demand. They sold.

FR

I have a dear friend who's far wealthier than I am, and I sometimes wonder if he dwells in the same economy I do. This feeling was reinforced one day when he said, out of the blue, "I don't think people really notice the price of gas."

tazzygirl -> RE: Gas prices are going down (6/10/2012 8:48:46 PM)

when someone is paying out per gallon 1/2 of an hours pay, and another is paying out 1/8th, I can see how some may think that. Doesnt make it true.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Gas prices are going down (6/11/2012 5:26:18 AM)

3.21 here.

servantforuse -> RE: Gas prices are going down (6/11/2012 5:31:02 AM)

It just went up here in Milwaukee 14 cents over night. It's now 3.69..

Marc2b -> RE: Gas prices are going down (6/11/2012 7:10:18 AM)

From a high of $4 not too long ago, gas prices in my area have dropped to about $3.50... but I go to the Res, where it is always twenty cents cheaper!

punisher440 -> RE: Gas prices are going down (6/11/2012 7:25:09 AM)

F.R.
I just bought gas last night at a Pilot station just south of Little Rock last night for $3.079 [sm=dancer.gif] ,but the average here is eastern Ar. is around $3.20's to .30's. I'm just glad to seeing going the other way instead of seeing the prices the "experts" were predicting a few months ago.

Lemme sum up rob's views:

The demand for oil has dropped because Europe's in the toilet and in no position to buy much, as well as China. The producers hadn't counted on that and we now have a glut, hence the drop.

I'm not sure I'm buying that. Prices skyrocketed to $4 a gallon on 2008, and then dropped like a rock. At the time, speculators were blamed, not supply and demand.

I actually just finished a research paper for my economics class on the prices of gasoline with a particular focus on 2008. There were several key factors involved at that time none of which involved speculators (ok, to a small degree they were involved).

A couple years earlier the US and Europe agreed to move to a low sulfur emission diesel known as ULSD. The target inception dates were 2005 and 2009 respectively. The US incurred very little change in demand for gas and diesel. However Europe urged consumers to purchase diesel powered vehicles prior to the inception.

You're wondering what diesel has to do with the price of gasoline, right? Diesel fuel is produced from heavy sour crude. So how did this affect the price of light sweet crude? The impact comes from the production capacity of refineries; add to that  economic policies in Europe that encouraged consumers to purchase diesel-powered vehicles rather than gasoline-fueled cars. The newly created demand for ULSD caused a reduction in production of gasoline, thereby causing a sustained increase in price.

While this was taking place China was building the Olympic Village for the 2008 games and also ramping up it's industrial muscle. China had also implemented price controls which made it unprofitable for small refiners there (referred to as teapots) to operate and caused them to shut down. This meant that China had to import higher-quality diesel supplies from the international market. This squeezed diesel supply even more.

The end of the 2008 Olympics added further downward pressure to diesel prices. China had accumulated stocks to assure adequate supplies. These stocks were released, reducing demand. Use in Europe also started to decline as the recession took hold there.
The sudden reversal of market trends took pressure off of the diesel market putting relief on refineries to produce more gasoline again, but by this time the U.S. economy was already well into it’s decline and the world economy was beginning to slump as well. As a direct result of these factors supply was ample and demand for fuel in general was down. This put prices for fuel into rapid decline.

If one looks at the price of fuel in the months just before a presidential election one notices the same thing. The price goes down.
In the months before the last presidential election the price of fuel was about 1.50 per gal.
In those months I purchased 5000 gal of fuel. I am still holding about 1200 gal. When the price hits 2.00 I will start buying again. I expect that to happen by september.

It was a little thing humans refer to as "humour". Here is a source http://www.thefreedictionary.com/humour if you need me to "validate"... [8|] Horses varied widely in price according to purpose, and were highly valued before modern transport but one could easily buy a good horse for such a sum or indeed a modest house.

Cry to Scott Walker ... You guys are about to enjoy ALL the 'privileges' (aka anal distention) that PRIVATIZATION WILL BUY YOU.
You're state is now officially operated by the GOP and we all wish you luck with that

Lucylastic -> RE: Gas prices are going down (6/11/2012 5:08:22 PM)

Gas buddy has prices from 2 hours ago at 3.55 seem s it depends where you go...
Having said that, I do enjoy the sound of the crickets chirrping instead of the prognostications of those expecting 5 -10 $ a gallon.
Its also gone down here from 1.30 a litre to 1.17-1,22

servantforuse -> RE: Gas prices are going down (6/11/2012 5:32:20 PM)

Who's crying. I just stated a fact. Also Scott Walker has nothing to do with the price of fuel. Thank you for finaly admitting that Wisconsin is now a RED state. You should let Obama know the same.
