identity -> How to attach animated gifs (6/3/2012 9:04:36 AM)

Hello,

I'd appreciate if someone could tell me how to attach gif animations to my profile and journal. So far only the first frame is 'captured'.
Thanks

I've answered this in your introduction, but for the benefit of others who may be reading,
gif files are not allowed in your profile or journal entries. You can't even email them using the mail feature.
They can, however, be used here as avatars if they are within the size guideliness, which is no more than 145x145.

Is that a site policy? Technically, at least, it seems feasible – albeit with some limits.

You can't host animated GIF images here as one of your profile photos, since everything uploaded gets converted to a JPEG, but it is possible to embed images that are hosted elsewhere, including animated GIFs, within the body of a profile. The profile editor has a an "Insert/Edit Image" button that easily allows for this, you just need to supply the URL of the desired image.

There are ways to get images into journal entries as well, but given the omission of an easy button to allow it, I'm assuming you perhaps aren't supposed to put images there.

That is site policy. Please do not attempt to attach them. They will be removed if they are reported, and, since I am aware that you are aware of the rules, if you have one attached I would suggest you unattach it. Welcome to Collarme. You have room for 14 profile photos. Those are the only photos of any type that should be on your profile. That is the space allocated for them.

Thank you for clarifying that, VAA. Mere curiosity, but would you mind sharing the rationale behind that policy? I think the Insert/Edit Image button was enabled in the TinyMCE editor here relatively recently; was that a mistake? A quick glance on my part at the other side didn't turn up an obvious policy proscribing embedded linked media – perhaps the policy could be given more prominent placement so users don't inadvertently violate it? It seems there may currently be a bit of incongruity in including and providing ready access to a simple GUI tool for including externally hosted images within a profile when making use of that tool is against site policy.

It is part of the whole formatting package. They were not talking about externally hosted images, they were talking about attaching the images IN their profile, as some do from time to time, for various reasons. For others, those that click links and do not know where they lead are just foolhardy.
