GOP Congressman believes women who receive abortions should face criminal charges

quote:

Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) unwilling admitted to MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Friday afternoon [6-1-2012] that HE BELIEVED WOMEN WHO RECEIVE ABORTIONS SHOULD FACE CRIMINAL CHARGES. “I think the punishment should certainly be very serious,” he said. “It should be more than a civil case. It should be something very serious”:

quote:

MATTHEWS: SO IT SHOULD BE A CRIMINAL MATTER FOR THE WOMAN AS WELL AS THE DOCTOR?

STEARNS: I THINK SO. You are killing an embryo and in some cases you are killing an embryo that is four or five months into gestation.

Stearns was appearing on the program to talk about the GOP’s recent effort to ban sex-selective abortions. That bill, the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act or PRENDA, failed earlier this week and would have fined and imprisoned doctors who knowingly aborted fetuses based on racial or gender discrimination.

The congressman sought to defend the measure by arguing that “IF ALL OF EUROPE AND MOST OF ASIA HAS THIS SAME RULE, THAT YOU CANNOT HAVE SEX SELECTION AS AN ABORTION, WHY CAN’T WE IN THE UNITED STATES PASS THE SAME BILL?”

But Matthews responded succinctly, saying, “IT’S ALWAYS AMAZING WHEN YOU GUYS ON THE RIGHT WANT TO IMPORT THE VALUES OF OTHER COUNTRIES. ANY TIME WE DO IT, ANY TIME A LIBERAL TRIES TO DO IT, YOU SAY THEY’RE BRINGING FOREIGN VALUES INTO THIS COUNTRY.”

If you agree with Congressman Stearns, what criminal penalty should a woman receive if she has an abortion?

* Pay a fine of from $25,000.00 to $50,000.00 dollars

* Jail term of 60 to 90 days

* Jail term of 5 to 25 years

* Life imprisonment, with a possibility of parole after 20 years

* Life imprisonment, without parole

* Death penalty

* Some other criminal penalty, not previously listed

Presumably life without parole is a given for a third offense, whatever sentence is given for the first two...

Let me conclude by saying "Fuck, what an asshole."

What PRENDA Would Mean to Women

On Wednesday, May 30, the United States House of Representatives will consider the "Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act." Known as "PRENDA," the latest version of the bill (there have been at least three) would ban abortions performed on the basis of sex. If this bill becomes law, a doctor or nurse who suspects that a patient is seeking a sex-selective abortion would be required to report her to authorities. Doctors who perform such a procedure could face jail time, fines, or lawsuits from a patient or her family.

The good news is this bill died in the house.

Small wonder a spokesman for a member of this party is currently advocating a face full of acid for uppity women...

farglebargle -> RE: GOP Congressman believes women who receive abortions should face criminal charges (6/3/2012 9:13:06 AM)

Well, it's what frustrated, violence prone men have always done when women get 'uppity', isn't it? They 'beat the bitch' until she 'learns he place'.

Ladies and Gentleman. The Republican Party. Beating up women like it's 1912 not 2012...

kalikshama -> RE: GOP Congressman believes women who receive abortions should face criminal charges (6/3/2012 9:14:03 AM)

Last year's effort was to "exclude from eligibility for Medicaid-financed abortions those women whose pregnancy is due to a rape not "forcible" enough to warrant sympathy from the new Republican majority. (I can only guess at a link between the devastating send-up on “The Daily Show” of this proposed legislation and its sponsor’s announcement that he would remove the “forcible rape” provision.)"

http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/09/what-would-shirley-do/

...Then she went on to say: “But I do not know any black or Puerto Rican women who feel that way. To label family planning and legal abortion programs ‘genocide’ is male rhetoric, for male ears. It falls flat to female listeners, and to thoughtful male ones.” She cited a study of women who died in pregnancy. Illegal abortion was the cause of 25 percent of the white women’s deaths, 49 percent of the black women’s, and 65 percent of the Puerto Ricans’. She also observed that 90 percent of the “therapeutic” abortions in New York City — the safe and legal ones during the regime of criminalization — were performed on white women.

Concidering most of those "values" comes from the Vatican and currently a GERMAN pope .... and where is the Vatican at?? not America...

I think people like this (anti-abortion & anti-birth control) should have their own penalty,.....life with the children their laws produce as an end result ....without the possibility of the state helping them out to pay for them for 25 years for each child.

They all "adopt one until there are none".... including the 100's of thousands of older kids allready in the US foster care and adoption system...AND they dont get to choose what age or race of the child they get ether. If nobody else gets a choice, they dont ether.

And no church or private foster care....and any child that dies or even suffers from the lack of adequate food, clothing, shelter, health care or education, (in no particular order) has to spend time working in the state-run non-religious orphanages their laws will also produce as an end result....without pay.....with the same penalty they want for women as the "3-strike" rule.

Watch how fast the wealthy abandon the middle class to pay for THAT law too like they do taxes now... These people want to enact laws like this because there's no direct consequences to themselves for doing so….because then they say they will not pay taxes for it…..until those children wind up in prison.

I happen to disagree with the Congressman from Florida, but IF we were to go there, 18 years seems appropriate for a, "well, we want a boy, not a girl," abortions (the actual subject of this legislation), and when the mother is a fucked up speed freak (whatever), we can adjust the sentence to how long it would be before state children's services stripped her of custody anyway.

Well, I happen to have no problem with this guy coming out and making his case. I have no problem with him believing the way he does.

I know, BIG SHOCK, right? Well, the reason I have no problem with it is that I believe people should feel free to disclose their true feelings and beliefs. Now, if he complains that he didn't get elected because of his beliefs, well, them's the breaks. Everyone has a right to their opinions and their beliefs. And, everyone should feel free to be open with those feelings and beliefs. And, when people know, fully, what a candidate believes and feels, they are more informed and will make choices that better align with their own feelings and beliefs.

Plus, I doubted it would get through, and it wouldn't have gotten signed by the President, either.

Had I been in there to vote, I'd have voted it down.

I don't agree with him, but I am curious about this statement...

What punishment do they have in place over there and why hasn't anyone brought it up before?

I looked and couldn't find it but I didn't have a lot of time.

Seeing as how it's a very common practice in India http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2008/04/06/choosing_to_eliminate_unwanted_daughters/ and China. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1728-4457.2001.00259.x/abstract

I have a feeling he's lying out his ass.

Fightdirecto -> RE: GOP Congressman believes women who receive abortions should face criminal charges (6/4/2012 5:32:28 AM)

Based on Congressman Stearn's argument, if Jane gets raped by her brother and becomes pregnant, and if she then gets an abortion, she and the doctor(s) who performs the medical procedure should face criminal penalties such as fine and or imprisonment.

Based on Congressman Stearn's argument, if Betty gets pregnant and her doctor(s) determine that carrying the fertilized egg to term would cause her to die, if she then gets an abortion, she and the doctor(s) who performs the medical procedure should face criminal penalties such as fine and or imprisonment.

With the possible exceptions of Congressman Stearns and the "pro-life" terrorist group, The Army Of God, most groups and individuals who are against a woman's right to choose only publically call for the doctor and the medical facility to be punished, not the woman.

Even anti-choice extremist Randall Terry of Operation Rescue may tacitly support blowing up medical facilities that perform abortions or shooting doctors who perform abortions but does not support blowing up the house where the woman who got the abortion lives or shooting her down in a parking lot.

But isn't calling for criminal action against the doctor and the medical facility and NOT calling for criminal action against the woman hypocritical?

I HAVE A DAUGHTER AND A GRANDDAUGHTER – WHICH IS WHY I AM PRO-CHOICE.

And I don’t want Congressman Stearns, or any other government official, deciding what my daughter or my granddaughter can or cannot do with their own bodies. If my daughter or my granddaughter were raped and became pregnant – I’d drive them to the clinic myself.

IMO, this is an issue negatively effecting every woman living in the United States, and the men who love them, at this moment in time. It is as important an issue as the economy or unemployment - for the never-ending desire to control what others do in their private lives burns in the heart of politicians of every type.

HELL YEA I would pay cash to watch that happen.

I doubt the "good" Congressman's claim that these types of laws are all over Europe and Asia. And even if they were, he just made a great case for <gasp> socialized medicine in this country. [:)]
