Lucylastic -> Female Hysteria ... A timeline on ways to treat it (6/2/2012 6:28:40 PM)

Fascinating look at the use of the term hysteria and treatment/toys for women thru the ages
Specially interesting for me was the writing of Galen(no not the ape) who said
"Following the remedies and arising from the touch of the genital organs required by the treatment, there followed twitchings accompanied at the same time by pain and pleasure after which she emitted turbid and abundant sperm. From that time on she was free of all the evil she felt.”
Check it out:)

The first I heard about this was from Dr. Ruth. I was mesmerized as she showed all the contraptions they built to deal with hysteria.

I still giggle when someone says "I laughed hysterically."

The first electro-mechanical vibrator was patented by the British doctor Joseph Mortimer Granville in the early 1880s. Portable but unwieldy, it ran on a 40-pound battery and was manufactured by the British medical manufacturer Weiss. While Granville himself disapproved of using his vibrator to treat hysterical women—advocating for its use on male skeletal muscles only—most of Granville’s fellow doctors were eager to pass the labor-intensive, time-consuming task of giving women "hysterical paroxysms" off to a machine. One doctor raved in 1906 that manual massage "consumes a painstaking hour to accomplish much less profound results than are easily effected by [the vibrator] in a short five or ten minutes."

That difficult? Really?

Nathaniel Highmore, an English surgeon who was one of the few doctors to publicly acknowledge that the end result of pelvic massage—the "hysterical paroxysm"—could also be described as an "orgasm," noted that it was no easy task. He likened it to "that game of boys in which they try to rub their stomachs with one hand and pat their heads with the other."

Men are lazy to care?? LOL
just kidding chaps
My favourite is the manipulator
While Taylor recommended using his device to treat pelvic disorders, he warned that women should be supervised to prevent "overindulgence."
