Should young Americans be beaten or flogged until they promise to vote Republican?

I realize many here agree with consensual beatings and flogging - but I believe the beatings Mr. Goldberg is suggesting would not be consensual.

Status: offline 		I was reminded of a local election here in the Boston suburbs where I presently live (though I'm moving to Rhode Island this month).

A five-term incumbent GOP State Representative was defeated by a Democrat who had never ran for political office before. After the election resluts were published, a local Republican organizer and one of the town's Board of Selectmen (we don't have a Mayor, we have a 3-person elected Board of Selectmen and an annual Town Meeting) wrote an angry "Letter To The Editor" to the local newspaper, suggesting that the town somehow find out who voted for the Democrat who won and have their voting rights taken away from them, because "anyone who doesn't vote Republican is clearly mentally ill and shouldn't be allowed to vote until they were cured".

The selectman was soundy defeated in their next re-election bid - after their opponent reprinted the original "Letter To The Editor" as a campaign ad.

This reminded me of a favorite story about Georges Clemenceau, the French premier who negotiated at Versailles. A reporter burst into his office, saying that Clemenceau's son had become a Communist. Le Tigre, as the French called him, replied, "My son is 22 years old. If he had not become a Communist at 22, I would have disowned him. If he is still a Communist at 30, I will do it then."

Status: offline 		So, Goldberg is saying that 18 year old people are not old enough to know how the world works, to know politics, or to know what they believe. Maybe we raise the voting age. And maybe an 18 year old shouldn't be old enough to join the military and die for his/her country either.

Status: offline 		Actually the major problem is that the age of 18 does limit people.

At age 18, people can vote, join the military, and get full time jobs with no limits on hours.

HOWEVER, I feel that at 18, people should NOT be allowed to join the military.

Consider this, they are old enough to die for their country, BUT not old enough to drink. I feel the two should be equal.

If an 18 year old is not of an age to drink responsibly, vote responsibly (according to at least one Republican) then they cannot be considered of an age to chose to fight and possibly die for their country.

Status: offline 		I think the man is 100% correct what he is saying. It certainly has nothing to do with the Republicans. Do you think the Democrats represent socialism? There are some very bright and developed people among 18 year old-s, but in general, they understand very little about the politics. This is why you can send them to war fighting for the corporations.

Status: offline 		Even though I saw plenty of alcohol abuse when I was in the USAF, I believe that if you are old enough to wear the uniform, you are old enough to drink. When I was at tech school in Colorado, those of us under 21 were limited to 3.2 beer and wine coolers and my goodness did it take a lot of work to get drunk! We had no such restriction in Okinawa and the booze at the base liquor stores was crazy cheap, which I don't support.

In the "old days" anyone on active duty could consume alcohol on military installations, regardless of the legal drinking age off-base.

However, in the mid-80s, advocacy groups, such as MADD (Mothers Against Drunken Drivers) lobbied Congress to change this. Federal law (United States Code, Title 10, Section 2683) requires military installation commanders to adopt the same drinking age as the state the military base is located in. The only exception to this rule is if the base is located within 50 miles of Canada or Mexico, or a state with a lower drinking age, the installation commander may adopt the lower drinking age for military personnel on base.
