"President Obama has been commander-in-chief for over three years and military personnel seem to appreciate HIS service. They are contributing to his re-election campaign at five times the rate that they’re contributing to Mitt Romney’s. Army employees—the ‘boots on the ground’—have been especially generous, contributing $108,571 to the President while giving only $22,004 to his opponent.

While neither Obama nor Romney is a veteran, Obama certainly has paid his dues in his handling of military decisions. As he said in his Memorial Day speech, “For the first time in nine years, Americans are not fighting and dying in Iraq. We are winding down the war in Afghanistan and our troops will continue to come home.” This certainly appeals to those who have been, or could be, sent overseas, but Obama has demonstrated his judgment and leadership in other ways. For instance, he ordered the mission that found and killed Osama bin Laden, and he joined with NATO in Libya to help oust Moammar Gadhafi"

Perhaps service people caught Romney and other Republican candidate's war rhetoric.

Given that we have about 1.5 million active duty military (~0.005% of the US population), a hundred grand in donations is not indicative of much support. Veterans, on the other hand, comprise about 13% of the population:

Sorry, but not everything that glitters is gold.

Soooo.... you ACTUALLY haven't grasped that MORE MEN generally enlist in the military than women -- this has to be explained to you?!!  Really?!! [sm=rofl.gif] lol

5 to 1.......ouch! [;)]

DarkSteven -> RE: Military Donations To Obama Dwarf Mitt’s (5/29/2012 7:32:33 PM)

Not surprising at all. I bet if you took a poll of active military, asking them which would be less likely to have them out in harm's way, Obama would beat Romney hands down. Romney recently made a speech saying that we're weaker because Obama wants to cut military funding, which ignores that massive land wars and occupations cost more than intelligence gathering, unmanned drones, and SEAL surgical strikes.

Gonna be nitpicky but 1.5 million is 0.5% +/- of the population, not 0.005%

Long as gallup reports him at 46% or higher in job approval among All Adults in the US (currently riding @ 48%). I wouldn't worry a bit K Clinton rode right around
I mean, it's been a while, and I'm going by memory, but I am almost certain that Clinton was polling at 44% mid year in 96 and he kicked Bob Dole's ass in November and PEOPLE ACTUALLY LIKED Bob Dole.

Oh, and if you were reading the NYT at the beginning of the year, Larry Sabato, who edits the Crystal Ball Newsletter said something like ...If you bet, you'd be dumb to lay money down in January based on the polls. And by June, you'd be far better off betting against the polls , if the elections from 1980 to 2008 are an indicator.

Just sayin'

I'll be happy to let people in on my election year pool later on this year... THAT IS... If the girls around here have the stomach for it. It ain't no superbowl party for cube pussies at a software company.

Well sure. No doubt about it. Doesn't everybody know that "Veterans" is a code-word for old white Republican Christian males?

Actually, it is talking about civilian employees of the Department of Defense and all branches of the military, NOT "boots on the ground" according to USA Today, in reporting on the same item.

quote:

USA Today reports that Obama has a greater than 5 to 1 advantage in donations from people who work for the Department of Defense or one of four military branches, with Army employees contributing the bulk so far: Individuals employed by the Army have given $108,571 to Obama and $22,004 to Romney.

Not to mention touting "military giving" of only 108,571 dollars from the entire military is a joke, much like Obama recently touting his "two trillion" in spending cuts while in truth he increased spending five trillion.

P.S. The bigger the spin the more desperate the source and that source is ultimately the Obama spin doctors desperate to somehow come up with a positive record Obama can run on. God knows it's not budget deficient reduction as promised, or employment under 8 percent, or heathcare reform, or closing Quantanamo Bay.

slvemike4u -> RE: Military Donations To Obama Dwarf Mitt’s (5/29/2012 9:42:46 PM)

Read somewhere(one of yesterdays papers) this is the first Presidential election since 1944(Roosevelt and Dewey) wherein neither of the candidates ever wore the uniform.
Not exactly on point,just an interesting little tidbit [:D]

Owner59 -> RE: Military Donations To Obama Dwarf Mitt’s (5/29/2012 10:56:26 PM)

I remember we had a good thread about whether military service was needed to be POTUS.

Just heard Mitten`s claim that "business success" was a requirement for president....[8|]

Historically, the democrat/liberal didn`t get much support from active duty personnel.

This is extraordinary and great news.[:D]

erieangel -> RE: Military Donations To Obama Dwarf Mitt’s (5/30/2012 8:28:25 PM)

How can Obama not run on the budget? He's not responsible for the budget, Congress is and since 2010, it has been Boehner's Congress--they've done nothing except almost cause a default which "encouraged" S&P to lower our credit rating. As for Getmo, he was going to close it, but the Republicans rose such a fuss that he couldn't do so because he didn't have anyplace to put the prisoners--he couldn't transfer them to stateside prisons. And he couldn't just let them go, some of those guys really are terrorists, though some are truly innocent.

???

Obama has raised about $200 million. Republicans have set a goal of $800 million between Romney and Super Pac money.

All the numbers in the OP show is that military personnel don't much give a fuck about either candidate, contribution-wise.
