What's wrong with this judge? What happened to common sense?

I once had a 19 year old student doing B+ work, but missing a lot of classes. One day she showed up and asked if we could talk. Turns out she had found her younger sister all silent and withdrawn, and eventually dragged out that their father was sexually abusing her. This kid got a full time job, hired a lawyer, went to court and got custody of her sister, all while going to school full time--at 19. She had documentation that the court appearances had conflicted with class times, and she had a viable plan and a schedule for making up the work. All she needed was an extension to do this.

Totally against the syllabus policies. She got her extension. Ya think??????

Geez. Heads, people. Not just for hats anymore.

This was on the news last night and the reporter interviewed the judge about it. Apparently the judge said he knew nothing about her hardships and most likely will be overturning the sentence.

In juvenile court you would think he would have asked if there were any extenuating circumstances.
IF he knew nothing, it is only because he didn't want to know.

What about jail for the parents who abandoned her and her younger siblings ?!?

He really wasn't convincing in the video, and he can't really take back the night she already spent in jail.
The only thing he can do is revoke the fine and get it off her record.

Sometimes there is such a thing as bad press, and apparently it is is influencing him here.

Oh I think he's already gone soft.. in the head.

I managed to catch the CBS news item on Youtube..

He says 'it's only one night in jail, hardly the death penalty.' No.. and it isn't Holiday Inn either. What about the reason why?

He didn't seem to know anything about the facts or reasons why she missed school. Aren't you supposed to, as a judge, get to know the full facts before making a decision?

Seriously, if there was a Nobel Prize for Stupidity..

An incompetent judge ought to be held accountable. Not only did he not understand the case/situation, he isn't all that concerned about the effect his lack has had. I am signing the protest as it just came to my email and this is a judge that isn't in the best interest of young people. He seems to have a very common attitude.. or is jaded and thinks, everyone that shows up in court must be dealt with so that they cannot run wild. If he knew his job, evaluated each situation, then he could be a judge. He has proven that he doesn't, so he shouldn't be a judge.

She needs to be shown that we value a young person doing what she has done when most would run away or go into crisis emotionally. She must be shown that she did the right thing, could use some help and should get it and that those that are in a position of authority, ought to belong there because they are as responsible as she has been.

I wonder how many other cases.... children's lives he has effected and if they should be evaluated by a real judge or team of investigators.

The family court judge whose daughter videoed him beating her with a belt was from Texas too.

Judge has a change of heart, and the money that was raised is going to people less fortunate than her.
