OK, it's funny but what the fuck is wrong with "I want to spend the rest of my life with you, are you going to be my wife?"

Probably why he asked her instead of you!

[:D]

I guess I should be heart broken despite the fact that I don't fancy the guy... Oddly enough I'm in a relationship that's going into its 10th year and we're tying the knot in June or July without a major fuss, we don't want a big production or being on YouTube or the media, we're doing it because we want to make a commitment to each other (and get the freaking tax breaks as we rather spend the money on our houses and pets than on tax).

I guess I've seen too many lavish weddings where they're still paying for the expense of the wedding a long time after the divorce happened. Too unromantic for that, I'd rather use the money to pay off the mortgage.

A marriage - to me - is a serious commitment, I don't need all the fuss with the proposal and dancing, gladly swap that for something a bit more real and substantial, I don't want to marry a showman or a producer, but a guy who loves me and I guy I love. I'm just that shallow...

That was just too cute. I didn't quite cry but I was awfully close!

And you need to find a sense of humor.

Congrats on your upcoming courthouse wedding, LadyC

Not everyone is as deep as you. I agree that it is ridiculous to spend 50K + on a wedding, although if you've got it, why not? That was hardly the case here, though. Maybe you watched a different video? To me, it looked like a talented and creative guy spent 99 cents to download a song from ITunes, and recruited friends and family, who are also in the arts, and who obviously love them both, to make the engagement as memorable as possible. I hardly think it caused him to miss a mortgage payment and it showed her the love and friendship she can expect for a lifetime. The whole thing was just so typical of Portland, it made me giggle.

But really, much happiness to you and I hope your wedding day will be a happy memory for you.

littlewonder -> RE: THE best wedding proposal EVER! (5/28/2012 8:09:27 AM)

I didn't see anything in the video that says they are having a lavish wedding. I just saw a man who was so in love with his girl that he wanted to announce his love to the world, shout it from the rooftops basically and they are a couple who like to have fun. I found it romantic and extremely sweet.

Then again I'm the romantic type who finds that when a man is willing to shout his love to the whole world to be a genuine, caring man who shows his love to the world.

But again, marriage to me isn't about tax breaks but a covenant between the two people and God and the union of two into one.

My girlfriend emailed me a link to this video, after I asked her what types of proposals she likes. I think I may have opened pandora's box. But the video was amazing. She's convinced my friends would be willing to do something like that. I have some ideas, but damn...

Oh dear. If I had any idea at all of proposing to some woman in the future, I'd keep *very* quiet about this video. Remember how well the de Beers company managed to convince the world that nothing less than a diamond would do as an engagement ring for your Beloved? This video could start another time-devouring and pocket-emptying trend . . . .

I've *never* been keen on public proposals. None of anyone else's business, as far as I'm concerned (my personal feeling, fine for those who do like such things, etc, etc). But, I'd still like to do something pretty damned memorable. Involving a mountain and a loch up in the Highlands, maybe. Or a dance floor somewhere in Paris. And then I'll publish a poem or a story about it.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: THE best wedding proposal EVER! (5/28/2012 11:13:55 AM)

I am going to have to disagree with you entirely on this one.

For the proposal itself: This is his version of "I sound my barbaric YAWP over the roofs of the world." (Walt Whitman reference) Spending that much time and effort shows that he is serious about his proposal. It wasn't like he turned to her on the bus and said, "Wanna get hitched?" (Bob Newhart reference)

As a dominatrix, surely you must know that sometimes it isn't so much what you say, but how you say it.

As for the wedding: It's an excuse, a happy excuse, to gather together 300 of you closest friends and family and have a celebration. The only other times in your life that people are going to do that is when you are born (too young to remember) and when you die (too dead to remember.)

This is another "how you say it" type of thing. Some people like to shout from rooftops.

Lordy, I'm entirely the opposite. Me, the most crucial thing when proposing to her would be to show her that she is all of my world.

I've always felt and believed that about my own proposal, were I ever to make one; way before I even had the words to express it.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: THE best wedding proposal EVER! (5/28/2012 12:40:23 PM)

Ordinarily, I find public proposals painfully embarrassing to witness. On billboards, on the scoreboards at sporting events, at public meetings, I have seen them all. Nothing like involving the unsuspecting public in one of the most personal moments in your life.

I didn't get that vibe from this. These were family and friends, not strangers. I thought it was very touching.

PeonForHer -> RE: THE best wedding proposal EVER! (5/28/2012 4:09:22 PM)

See, this is more my style. Where she says, 'Is it still raining? I hadn't noticed' - she's the same. Nothing in the world but her and me. Nothing and nobody matters, except her. I'm not an extrovert, I'm an introvert. *That's* the real thing, for me.

You're more English than you think you are. Sorry, but there it is. [;)]

LadyHibiscus -> RE: THE best wedding proposal EVER! (5/28/2012 4:35:35 PM)

I cannot imagine someone making me a public display like that. Ever.

Don't get me wrong: if I thought that would make 'my intended' happy, I'd do that for her. But it wouldn't be the ultimate gesture of love from me to her. That would have come before.

I'm a total extrovert, but when it comes to intimacies within my relationship, I'm the same way. For me, moments like that should be just between he and I, and nobody else.

They are actors. They love being on public display.

I absolutely LOVED IT!!! Yeah, that was epic. It made me cry. It's so nice to see such happiness and joy and all the people they were able to involve in this and have fun at the same time. She's one lucky gal.

I actually didn't cry (it's a man thing), but there may have been a few (small....VERY SMALL) sprinky dinks...I didn't cry....I might have had a "moment"....but I didn't actually cry.

Okay....I fucking cried....a little...

Okay I fucking bawled like a sissy....I admit it....fuck.....

I'm crying now....sue me.

LookieNoNookie -> RE: THE best wedding proposal EVER! (5/30/2012 5:32:21 PM)
