I would second the suggestion of finding a local attorney (solicitor) and have him write letters to the weirdo and his family demanding the return of the jewelry and threatening a lawsuit otherwise. She doesn't have to go through with it, and most people get nervous when threatened with lawsuits. Especially parents of adult children with issues who have had to pay for legal representation for them in the past.

Actually she can report him to the police in the UK by fax or phone, I would recommend calling them up and explaining the situation, then faxing them or sending by mail a letter with a copy (notarized) of her passport and maybe a picture and a good description of the jewelry. He might just reconsider keeping her jewelry if some friendly people in uniform pay him a visit.

Of course he might deny everything, but at least it will be on file then!

Hey Little wonder your so mean! God love the girl, I mean not everygirl is so smart as to break up with a guy that started going out with her. This is because they feel wanted for once by the opposite sex. Naive she may be but becareful who you say that to, especially where you live as someone, could actually hit you!
To little kitten I'd say she tells him honestly to: a) give her back the money the money she gave him just to look after for her. That she's going to live with someone else a friend or whoever lets say! Then if he's stupid enough to hit her she's got a case!
I know, thats crazy to say that but hey you know unless it looks like physical abuse then she has more of a case against him. When was he born before 1950? Women are no longer second class. Is it her apartment or not? If it isn't maybe she could stay with you for a while little kitten? Her boyfriend sounds very strange I remember telling a guy over the phone that we were broken up and I felt strange about doing it as I would normally do it in person but when he said "I don't care, I'm back with my ex girlfriend now. I hung up on him and then he started sending me messages aka "Why did you break up with me?" to which I just wrote leave me alone and then he sent me 3 texts 1.saying I can't believe that you dumped me, thats my job! 2. Are you really upset? Then 3. Aww my girlfriend is back from the shops it'll be what 5 hours of getting to fuck her!!Lol,Lol,Lol!
I dated that gobshite when I was 25 so it does make sense the older you get the wiser you can become!

You apparently missed a great deal of the original post. The woman was VISITING and stayed for 6 months. She is no longer in the same country as the guy. Little Kitten isn't in the same country either.

To be honest unless one of the following conditions is true the UK police will most likely sympathize and say that it's a civil matter:

1. That the jewellery was sold and the money was given under false pretences, i.e. fraud.
2. That your friend was forced or coerced into selling the jewellery and handing over the money by way of some threat against your friend's well-being or safety through blackmail, threat of assault, or withholding documents and restricting movements.

In short there has to be some sort of crime committed. But then the police have to consider whether it's worth investigating, and even then it's a matter for the Crown Prosecution Service.

However with the ring and necklace your friend has a stronger case and if said guy doesn't give back these items then it can be reported as a theft. The police might see this differently but your friend gave the jewellery to the guy for safekeeping, not as a gift, so his refusal to return the items in a court can be construed as theft.

Please also bear in mind that if your friend doesn't get any joy from the local police she can report the crime directly to the Crown Prosecution Service.

If the case goes to court your friend doesn't have to go back to the UK because the Crown Prosecution Service will be acting on her behalf and the case will be brought in a magistrate's court.
