Chilling.  If I had any kids they would not have webcams. [undecided if they would have internet]

Mine have internet.  But they must always use it in the same room as me.  There is no seperate computer room with hidden screen.  They have their own laptops and I sit with them whilst they are one them.   Its up and there.  But they are not allowed to communicate with people unless they go to school with them or know them realtime.  But then I keep them informed on dangers and do not hold back on the risks - they are well aware of what can and might happen.  I don't deal in scare stories or hidden half-lies.
They get the truth.

Peace and Rapture

I totally agree and do the same thing. Truth is some scary shit as it is... and my girls know about .... and I remind them everytime they power up. I make them use laptop in frontroom with me here... if not home.. no internet.. I have all passwords to sign on. So without me here.. they can't even get into their own accounts where their homework and stuff is. And if i'm busy and give them the password (cooking ..etc...)... it's changed at night before I go to bed.  And they're absolutely not allowed on cam... I unplug it from laptop while they're on it.

It never ceases to amaze Me how some kids can get pulled into these things.

I personally talk with My son about these exact things.
I do allow him to have a pc in his room, hes 17.The frequent sudden open of the door is a great way to cut down on them being where they shouldnt.
Notice I say cut down...I honestly feel no matter where you keep the PC they will find a way to get around the parents...I know I always did.

The key I guess is being very honest and open with your kids,I use their terms and dont sugar coat anything. Its sad that they have to face such aweful things, but if We as parents can be there for them, they can conquer the pressures.
I'm lucky enough to be  the Moms Taxi Service...I keep My ears open
and interject when needed. So far none of them use drugs or drink...not to say they havent tried it,they have admitted to Me they have. They didnt like it.Does that they wont do it again ...no.But hopefully My input helps the next time.
All I can do is hope I have a positive influence over My own kids and their friends.

Why no PC in his room when he's 17?  I mean look unless you dont want him to have porn how else is he gonna get it? Magazines are so 20th century.

MsIncognito -> RE: Oprah- today- kids need to see this! (6/6/2006 1:23:55 PM)

I read about this "kid" (now an adult)  a couple of months ago and as harsh as it sounds, I don't buy for one second that he was a victim. IMO, he saw an opportunity and cashed in big time. I think he should be charged in adult court with producing and distributing child pornography. To now cry boo-hoo after cashing in is so bloody disingenuous .... especially now that he's too old to be appealing to his clients anymore. Hell, I'm normally a real bleeding heart but I think this guy is a criminal. I think Oprah put quite a spin on his story to make him look like a victim. While I think the overall message is one parents and kids need to hear I think in this specific case the "kid" was an opportunist who should be charged to the full extent of the law.

Chaingang -> RE: Oprah- today- kids need to see this! (6/7/2006 12:06:07 AM)

I can't find it now, but this kid made some serious money did he not? I understand that as a minor perhaps he was exploited and also exploited himself without a fuller awareness of the consequences of his actions - that I believe. But this kid is no saint by any stretch of the imagination. Can he be both victim and accomplice; or do we have to say that he is a victim first and foremost?

My concern is that parents will go into some kind of legislative fit instead of taking personal responsibility for what their kids do. I believe that if parents have good relations with their children, open lines of communication, and are realistic about what their children are capable of then everything will be cool. Children need guidance and feedback, not cages with no doors and no windows.

The problem is always where a parent thinks a child will simply conform to some unrealistic set of expectations and overly rigid codes of behavior - they almost never do, I didn't. My brother and I often talk to his kids with the idea that they are going to get into trouble sometimes - we talk to them about responsible behavior and what to do in terms of damage control after fucking up. For example, we might discuss getting drunk at a party. We tell them a drink or two is no big deal but also caution them against drunkenness (I am never drunk). If they are drunk for whatever reason we want them to call home and let us know what's going on. Maybe we'll come get them and bring them home, maybe they'll stay at a friends house overnight - but under no circumstances are they to get behind the wheel of a car and compound their foolishness. The reason I say "we" is that I am Plan B - if they can't reach their Mom or Dad they call me and we handle the situation and get them safe. Safety comes before punishment. We always highlight that their well-being is the reason we care at all. I always tell them that they can always use me as a buffer between themselves and their parents if need be - that I will always help them no matter what, even if it means negotiating with their parents on their behalf. I tell them that I have seen it all and certainly heard it all before (and I really have, of course). Uncle's get the superhero gig.

Anyway, those two kids never get into trouble (or at least very rarely) because they know they are surrounded by people who care about them and are always there for them. They may have secrets, but they don't have to have secrets - nothing is off limits as a topic for discussion. Their parents have realistic expectations about youthful foibles and sexual experimentation. Generally their school grades are in the above 3.5 range and they have all kinds of hobbies and friends. Of course, shit will happen - it always does. At least they are prepared and they know who they can trust and who has their backs.

feastie -> RE: Oprah- today- kids need to see this! (6/7/2006 4:27:09 AM)

My children, currently 14 and 11, are allowed access to the internet which is appropiate for their ages.  They've only this year gotten a laptop, which they share.  They are allowed to use it in the family rooms or in my room with me, but they are not allowed to use it behind a closed door.  They are not allowed email, instant message or chat.  There is no webcam in the house.  I do not view other people's webcams.  I often look over their shoulder to see what they're doing.  We have the child security service and they are not "geeks" and haven't a clue how to bypass it.  Their computer time is limited.

They have subscriptions to www.studyisland.com and to www.cosmeo.com.  My daughter spends her time either on a doll making site, or looking up art images.  (she is becoming quite the little artist).  My son plays games on Nick (with my supervision) or he gets his sister to search out sites about the games they enjoy.

They feel so lucky to even have the computer that they don't attempt to break the rules, as they know it will become my computer, even temporarily.

The thing that struck me in reading Justin's story, the thing that kept repeating in my mind is, "What is wrong with his mother?"  She should have said no to a computer in his room.  She should have said no to a webcam.  She should have said no flying off to a "convention."  The father should be brought up on charges.  (Flaying would be better, but it's not allowed). Anyone else wonder why he's in Mexico?  Kids DO get in trouble, kids DO things that aren't good for them.  They're kids.  That's why they need age appropriate limits.

The most valuable advice my father has ever given me..."Know where your kids are and who they're with, all the time."

I most definitely practice this advice, faithfully.

i agree. And good ole Oprah is always up for an opportunity to "look" like she's doing something good, whilst uping her ratings.

Granted this kid was enticed, and his reason for doing this to begin with is more far reaching than what it appears. But, yes he made his own decision and he benefitted from it. He needs mental help and to be held accountable for his decisions. His father is scum.

Like prostitution it takes both sides so when a prostitute is arrested, the "johns" should be as well. No demand, no service.

Littlepita -> RE: Oprah- today- kids need to see this! (6/7/2006 12:03:04 PM)

My daughter is 14 and has a computer in her room. I know that's scary and I agree that there is a level of danger to her being able to have it on in private. I do make sudden and unannounced visits to see what she is doing. She isn't allowed a webcam. I have all her passwords and do check them regularly. She knows that if she tries to clear her history and I find out about it she will lose her computer. We talk a lot about what she does online, who her friends are and the dangers of people she doesn't know. She is careful, but I still worry of course. [&:]

Per haps he is scamming,.,,,,      [still tho] the shows message is potent and overdue.

What is wrong with Oprah?  She has done alot of good.  Do you blame her  for   being successful?

How do you feel about Jerry Springer?
