Status: offline 		Back after WWII (I want to say BF Skinner or Milgram) there were studies on authority done.

They took a group of boy scouts and divided them into three teams.

Team one was supposed to represent the Nazi's and the Communist and the leader was told to be just short of a sadist. He ordered the boys to preform a series of tasks. Screamed at them, demeaned them and otherwise treated them like shit.

The researchers found that the boys produced more of the given tasks than anyone else but that they were miserable, unhappy and wanted to leave the group.

The Second group was democratic and was Representative of the US, They produced just as much as the Nazi Group and were a great deal happier.

The third group was supposed to represent France, where the team leader, read the newspaper and generally ignored the boys. They produced nothing but that they were the happiest of all three groups.

In fact, it sounds silly. I call bullshit.

What I wonder is if the ones in group one got their V2 rocket technician badge?

The bolded statements are contradictory.

Couldn't locate the source of this - are you sure it is a real study?

It sounds to me like more of an illustrative example to trigger discussion around the topics of authority, work and happiness.

Why is it assumed that the nice way to give instructions is the western way anyway? I've met some right arsehole that barked orders to subordinates (in the west).

Status: offline 		Sounds like propaganda... Nazis and Communists shouldn't scientifically be put in the same group, their basic agendas and perceived methods of command are distinct from each other. We also know for a fact that the democratic group would have taken twice as long to get anything done because they would have needed to vote on and campaign against each other for everything.

ETA:
I think OP's actually talking about Kurt Lewin's thesis on "Leadership climates" done in the 40s, still used today in management training. The actual categories are Autocracy, Bureaucracy, Democracy and Laissez-Faire, characterising climates where a leader does all the planning/controls all the work, controls all the work in blind adherence to higher instruction, has some control of the work in collaboration with staff, and no control of the work whatsoever leaving it fully delegated to the staff. The purpose of the study was to identify the major styles that exist of leadership, and the circumstances under which they would be appropriate and the most beneficial.
