SternSkipper -> Tonight, on the way home from a concert... (5/11/2012 11:35:02 PM)

... Cape Ann Symphony.... had to take my son to and from as it's part of the requirement for his music merit badge in scouting. Anyway, I had some time to kill while he was at the event and the school it was held at is a mere 3 blocks from "The Boulevard" here in Gloucester (beautiful harborside walk... it's where the famous statue you might be familiar with if you've ever seen a REAL box of fish sticks .... Anyway, there's been a little girl that went missing while with her mother at a beach here and there's been all kinds of anguish.
And tonight the landmark and the little girl came together in a kind of humbling way during a vigil held by the family and friends.
I was pretty moved by it and I thought I'd show other people what was going on here from more of a local perspective than a lot of you would normally experience....

That poor mother will be laden with such guilt for the rest of her life. Every motherly inch of me feels pain for her.

I feel its kind of harsh for people to blame the mother after what happened, unless she left the toddler for more than a few minutes on the beach where she knew there were strangers around. By contrast the McCann's left their three children alone in a hotel room, even if they repeatedly returned from a nearby restaurant to check they were OK.

I know that wasn't in reply to me, but just in case, I wanted to mention that I feel for the mother because she herself admits she shouldn't have left to retrieve the ball, and so she must feel responsibility and as a mother, she might be placing enormous guilt on herself. Not that she deserves blame from others. I think it's a situation where she will always be looking back, asking herself "What if?" I feel sad for her.

Hi Kaliko, it wasn't intended as a response to yourself but to a point made in the article Skip posted a link to. I appreciate that you feel a lot of sympathy for her situation, and it is the kind of thing that someone (particularly a mother) would find next to impossible to cope with, as you suggested.
