FR I can't get too worked up over this. If you figure that Presidents are essentially national CEOs, they make quite a bit less than their private industry counterparts. The Former Presidents Act, which provides for pensions and other benefits, is fairly recent (1958). It arose in large part as a way to help Harry Truman, who had modest resources. One of the things I learned at DC's Woodrow Wilson House is that Wilson (only President to retire in the capital or be buried there) couldn't afford to buy a decent house. (I can relate!) So ten friends chipped in.
