Maurice Sendak dead at 83.

When I was very young and the world seemed to be against me, I went to a place Where the Wild Things Are, courtesy of a man who understood that children are much more complex and aware than adults give them credit for and that children have no limits upon their imaginations.

Today, when I need to, I many places to go to, many different kinds of wild things. If there are limits, they are few, thanks to the man who taught me otherwise.

Thank you Maurice and goodbye.

The Wild Things will continue on without you for as long as there are children... but they will be a little sadder from now on.

The movie was on (A&E I think) just a few nights ago. Yes I watched it.

Sendak appeared on Fresh Air with Terry Gross several times over the years. Read the highlights or hear the interviews: http://www.npr.org/2012/05/08/152248901/fresh-air-remembers-author-maurice-sendak

Colbert did an interview of Sendak once.

I've never seen the movie, I guess I'll have to check it out. Of course, it is a preordained conclusion that it could never compare to the book or the memories I have of it.

The following is a true story:

Yesterday (May 8th) was my niece's birthday. We had the usual pizza/wings/cake celebration after work. My niece has a four year old son. My mother decided that among the gifts she would give to my niece was some children's books she could read to her son... and one of the books was... you guessed it.

My mother had not yet heard that Maurice Sendak had died. She was quite surprised and saddened to hear about it.

It is, though, I think a great tribute. The man may be gone but his words will live on.
