Trying to figure out how to kill the little fuckers. My small auxiliary dog is a flea magnet.
The large main dog only gets one every month or so.
Ive tried dips, flea shampoo, frontline, spraying the yard, flea powder, etc, etc, etc. I mean he's literally got bunches of them 3 days after I put frontline on him.

have you asked your vet? Maybe they know of something commercially stronger.

Do NOT use OTC flea medicine--some animals have severe and permanent reactions.

Advantage/Advantix works quite well--see vet. You may have to flea bomb your place if it's infected.

Key to flea management--don't wait to see fleas. Treat your dog every month, year round. They are far easier to prevent than to eliminate.

[NOTE--the exception is puppies, where you just might have to do the warm soapy bath thing, picking off and killing the fleas one by one, until pup is old enough for flea medicine.]

MM, he's 2 and advantix doesn't work. Ive even used agricultural strength dip. the funny thing is that he and the old dog are together 24/7 and she might get a flea once a month. (I call him the small auxiliary dog but he's about 90#)

I don't use anything on the old dog because she's about 12 and has cancer. Her immune system is probably compromised because of that and she's weak but she's a loving old drooler. (bloodhound).
I see a flea on her maybe once a month.

I've been using Revolution (vet recommended)on my cat's for a few years now, and have not had a flea issue since.
I skip the winter months, and have extended the dosage beyond the once a month with no lapse in affectiveness.
Check your email! :)

Look up cedar oil from a place in Texas. I believe they have something for pets, but if the fleas are in the house or around it, you may need to get something for that. In the house, I recommend, for any bug... fogging the house with cedar oil... I think if you look up best yet, that is what you need. By fogging with cedar oil, you shut down their respiratory system. No bug gets out alive. They have sprays for people if you are camping and all sorts of stuff. I won't use anything else. And... everybody and everything smells good!

Try the Seresto collar. The Guy was involved with the development and is quite satisfied with the final product.

I'd try Revolution. These fleas are probably all related and there is now a problem with fleas having genetic resistance to the active ingredient in some of the treatments.

Are the dogs allowed inside? Does your yard have sandy soil?

i have a smooth short haired patterdale terrier and she is a magnet for fleas too. it's because she gets in all the undergrowth looking for stuff. the best thing i have found for her is johnson's flea tablets. 15 mins after giving them all the fleas are dead, but the dog is fine. they also do sprays for carpets and such. that's here in the uk but i'm betting there is something similar in the US.

i've spent hours picking fleas off of that madam before finding those tablets.

Wow, frontline works pretty well for my lot... they have injections that kill the fleas but I'm not sure I'd want to risk it. Frontline works quite well but only if you clean the rest of the house as well...

Go to your local Petco or whatever and get some Brewer's yeast and Garlic pills.  Worked wonders for my dogs when we had a flea problem.

You are going to need to bomb your house, wait a couple days and bomb again for the hatched eggs.

If you can still get them....go to the vet and get a couple of "Bug Bombs". The number needed is based on the size of your house. These things work great! One treatment and you're done. You start them and simply leave the house for two or three hours.

I gave mine garlic pills for a while, but my vet told me that it's actually really bad for dogs when given regularly, checked up on it and it's true, I guess the amount depends on the size of the dog, but I'd rather not take risks with the furry kids

http://www.entirelypets.com/toxicfoods.html

quote:

Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger.

Dogs affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet's red blood cells burst while circulating in its body. Symptoms include Hemolytic Anemia, labored breathing, liver damage, vomiting, diarrhea, discolored urine.

The poisoning in dogs occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to puppies, can cause illness.

While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness in dogs.

Are you opposed to bombing due to your old dog?

I'm resistant to bombing due to my chemical sensitivities but when we had a flea circus cuz R was being cheap and using flea collars, bit the bullet and bombed. Afterwards, we used Revolution.

That's why I'm not bombing yet. I have no carpet on the main level anyway and there is a waterfall/fishpond in my sunroom. Fishies n bug bombs don't work out well.
