Tis me, the one who "flunked Google".

Someone I know would use help from an online support group I know of, but the list of groups is a mile long and after half an hour I barely made a dent. See...I need a NAME for it. Gah.

Does anyone know the name for... An adult sibling of a disabled child (sister was a burn victim) ? She was present when the accident happened, was three to her sister's five, they were alone for a short while in the car while her sis found the matches in the glove box and started lighting them. Her dress went up in flames.

Anyway, she became the invisible child in the house after this, as her sister needed all the care her parents had time to give. Having a special needs child is a reason why I never had a second child, as I was afraid my autistic son would take all of my time and energy and the other kid would suffer the consequences.

Being somewhat literal minded, I tried looking up "invisible child".

I don't think survivors' guilt would quite handle it, though this sort of group would be easy to find. Yes, I will include it on the list.

What she does with her own shrink in her own time is her business, but yanno, when most of us have problems it helps to be around others of our own kind. I'm afraid that I was not a good choice to talk with. If anyone knows the shrink phrase for this so I can look it up, I'd appreciate it.

This is probably a decent place to start. It's somewhat general, and perhaps aimed at parents, but it's got a bunch of links.

Doesn't seem to be a term beyond, sort of, special needs siblings.

Google search

wow, you're very thoughtful for helping your friend find this.

i searched google using this:
siblings who become invisible brother sister disabled

https://encrypted.google.com/#hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=siblings+who+become+invisible+brother+sister+disabled&oq=siblings+who+become+invisible+brother+sister+disabled

Many possibly good links appeared, with these 3 standing out for me (support groups of siblings of disabled people) :

http://www.athealth.com/consumer/disorders/disabsibling.html

http://www.southnassau.org/sibsplace/parentinginfofeedback/atsibsyouwillhear.cfm

http://www.thechancerchronicles.com/invisible.html

ps - i've never heard of a name for that.

Thanks to all of you...GrandPoobah, DomKen, and Karmastic. I knew I could count on fellow kinksters to help me out with this. *big grin*

I've only gone to three links tonight and will look over the rest after I've slept. Unfortunately I've picked up a nasty cold and will be going to bed a lot sooner than my usual time. Most of what I am reading so far is for parents of kids, not for the adult children who are still dealing with the fallout. If I look harder within the links you all gave to me, as well as going to every last one, I am sure I will find some group to help her to heal.

I would also like to understand this better.
