Iamsemisweet -> Have people gotten crazier in the last four years? (5/2/2012 8:21:55 AM)

The county where I live has been hammered by the recession. About four years ago, there was a rash of murder/ suicides, where one spouse would kill the other, then themselves. In the last year, there has been a string of murder/ suicide/arsons where men have killed their family members (in one case, 5 kids), set the house on fire and then killed themselves. There was another suicide/ arson last night, although that guy just killed himself, and left his family out of it.
I don't remember these kinds of crazy things happening, at least with such regularity, before 2008. Are these kinds of desperate acts happening everywhere?

I think it is two fold.

#1 Stressful times cause people to behave more extremely. I think it's actually been building since September 11, 2001. When the financial bubble burst, it was the proverbial straw for a lot of people. The fact that there was/is, no easy and quick fix has amplified the whole thing.

#2 I think that with technology being what it is, and the media being what it is, we also hear/read more stuff than we used to. More gets reported and in a much more sensationalized way.

Housing crash hit San Diego pretty hard. The prices were ridiculous and so many people thought it would just keep going off. We have at least one murder/suicide a month now....and the majority are tied to people struggling through the current economy.

I think LT nailed it. A dire economy combined with technology means we have more and hear about more.

I think the crazy is endemic. And with insta-news, we hear about the crazy because folks love that stuff. It's an endless reality show.

I say about 10 at least. Mass psychosis. The NWO Matrix. NLP.
You are either with them or against them. Real or Fake.
A nice ol' black and white, no grays in the future hombre. Full color vision again.[:D]

I dunno,.. people jumped out of windows with the stock market crash in the Great Depression too. That is one image from that time, even tho it wasnt many people that actually did that..

I know someone in SoCal that got caught very early in this housing/economic crash, lost his house, etc and after 3 years he bought another house (last year).. so imo, its a matter of people finding a way for them to make it thru and a see a light at the end of the tunnel.. people that commit suicide for financial/debt reasons dont see that tho..

I dont hear about this stuff tho, I dont watch or read the news..

Cognitive dissonance ( believing contradictory 'facts' ) makes people do stupid stuff.

Deep down, we all know those buildings didn't fall because jets hit them. Etcetera. But what do you do about it?

I don't think we will look back on these years with nostalgia.

LaTigresse -> RE: Have people gotten crazier in the last four years? (5/2/2012 11:13:56 AM)

These years, have been pretty damned good to me. I am surrounded by good people, have a home I love, family I adore.......I know I sure as hell won't be looking back on this last decade with any negativity.

One of my clients told me that she thinks there will be rioting for food in the US in the next decade. How do you speak to that level of paranoia?

Tell her that spam will keep that long.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Have people gotten crazier in the last four years? (5/2/2012 11:41:33 AM)

Actually, I did pretty well these last few years.
I, of course, have also heard about people jumping off buildings during the Great Depression.  But murdering your children and/or spouse, and then burning the house down around them?  Seems like a whole new level of crazy.  If it had just happened once, it is an aberration.  But there have been three murder/suicide/arsons in this State in the last year, two of them in my county.  Many more suicide/arsons.

LaTigresse -> RE: Have people gotten crazier in the last four years? (5/2/2012 11:42:42 AM)

Seriously, I do believe that there are no more per capita. Just a helluva lot more people and the things I've already mentioned.

you might be right.. but according to this article, few stats on murder/suicide are kept so it can be hard to notice an incresase..

"Virginia is one of the few states that keep murder-suicide statistics, as part of its participation in the National Violent Death Reporting System, a project of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to a decade's worth of data collected by the state medical examiner, Virginia averages around 18 a year. In the Tidewater District, an area far larger than just South Hampton Roads, the average is less than three.

But in 2011, South Hampton Roads alone had eight, the most ever recorded.

There is no simple explanation for the spike, particularly since crime overall is down. Some blame the economy; unemployment and foreclosure can tip the already-troubled over the edge. In a recent CDC survey of 9,000 women, one-in-four said they'd been attacked by husbands or boyfriends."

Speaking of this: Junior Seau (football player) just killed himself. It was on the internet within minutes.

I'm in Baltimore. It's the same here as it's always been....murder, rape, suicides, drive-by shootings, etc.....Unless you go by what the police stats say that it's on the decline here.

Duskypearls -> RE: Have people gotten crazier in the last four years? (5/2/2012 7:28:16 PM)

These are challenging times, especially for those at the end of their rope.
